Wanted: Your banana peels, coffee grounds, and veggie scraps!

This May we installed a three-bin-set of compost containers at Gorman Chairback, Little Lyford, and Medawisla! Made possible through the DEP Waste Diversion Grant, these insulated composters are designed to withstand Maine's harsh winters, turn food scraps into finished compost fast, and keep rodents and other curious critters out. The new system will help divert food waste and cardboard from the landfill while creating nutrient-rich compost that staff and Greenville partners can take to use in their gardens.

From hauling parts to turning wrenches, it was a rewarding week of hands-on sustainability work for AMC Sustainability Director Jen Natyzak and Sustainability Intern Brooke Goldfeder in some of Maine's most beautiful landscapes!

Maine Education and Sedomocha MS students were able to release the Atlantic Salmon fry they have been raising and learning about since February. It was a very successful semester of learning and observing--over 100 of the 200 eggs survived to the fry stage. These young fry will help to repopulate the waters that run through MWI conserved lands and will benefit from the many fish passage projects that have been completed over the years. Conservation is a multi-generational team effort!

Gorman Chairback Solar Upgrades! ☀️

The Gorman Chairback solar project is now fully operational with expanded panel capacity, new batteries, and upgraded inverters, and it’s already delivering amazing results. The system is designed to shift the lodge from daily generator reliance to primarily solar-powered operations, significantly reducing fuel use, operating costs, and emissions while improving reliability and reducing maintenance demands on staff.

🟧 Fuel + cost savings: Expected to cut diesel use by ~75% (roughly 1,800–2,000 gallons/year baseline), while also avoiding ongoing generator service costs.

🌎 Emissions impact: Contributes meaningfully to AMC’s climate goals, with Maine lodge diesel reductions representing up to 10% of total organizational emissions when fully implemented.

🧑‍🔧 Operational benefits: Less generator runtime means longer equipment life, fewer breakdowns, and a more reliable, lower-maintenance system for staff to manage day-to-day.

🌲 This project was made possible because of Jennifer Natyzak and AMC’s Net Zero goals, our partner Assured Solar, and our amazing Development team who were able to secure funding from a generous donor for this important project.

This is a three phase project, with Lyford and Medawisla getting upgrades later in the year.
🙌 More excitement to come!

Maine Education wrapped up Wabanaki Studies with two walking fieldtrips for Kindergarten and Grade 1 to the Moosehead Historical Society museum. Thank you to Luke Muzzy and museum staff for opening your doors to these young learners. They went on a treasure hunt to find items that we learned about throughout our studies, learned about rhyolite from Mt. Kineo (an important mountain for Wabanaki citizens), and received books filled with historic pictures of their hometown. The weather even cooperated for a picnic outside by the falcon and canoe sculptures. Community partnerships make learning a unique and memorable experience for all! Thank you!

Our staff in Maine got some unique training this spring. Sam Heffner, Maine Forest Ranger, came out to Gorman Chairback to show us how to operate the fire pumps that are used to fight wildland fires and keep surrounding structures safe should the need ever arise. Each lodge has one of these specialized pumps, and the Trails and Lands team has several smaller versions. They pull water from any pond, river, or stream, and send it out the other end at 350psi, which is very impressive.

A special thank you to Chelsea Daniels for coordinating this training by the Maine Forest Service. A great partnership as we continue to protect these special places. Seen below are Madison and Coleman practicing with the fire hose!

Maine Education had a beautiful sunny day to teacher Greenville 5th grade about weather and climate today. We analyzed graphs, data and identified how weather and climate differ. In future lessons, students will analyze the CSO data they collected this winter and compare it to other data across Maine.
