Wowzers

🌈 There is a specific fifteen-minute window after a Gulf Coast afternoon thunderstorm clears the beach that most people miss entirely because they went inside when the rain started. The storm moves east.

The sun breaks through from the west. The sand is dark and clean and still steaming slightly in the returning heat. And if the geometry is right — if you are standing at the water's edge at the exact moment the sun angle hits the retreating rain curtain over the Gulf — you get something that stops every thought in your head completely.

A full double rainbow over the Gulf of Mexico, seen from an empty beach with the storm still visible over the water, is one of those experiences that is almost impossible to adequately photograph and even harder to describe.

The primary bow is brighter and more saturated than any rainbow you will see inland — the combination of open water, clean post-storm air, and the flat, unobstructed horizon creates optical conditions that make the colors more vivid and the arc more complete than almost any other environment can produce.

And the beach is empty because everyone went in when the storm hit, which means you are standing there alone in front of something extraordinary that the people in the condos behind you are completely missing.
