Stump Sprouts

Stump Sprouts Stump Sprouts Cross Country Ski Center and Guest Lodge Instruction and rental equipment are available. Lofts, cozy nooks, art work, plants, and a fireplace.

Twenty-five kilometers of trails ranging from gently rolling groomed and track-set loops to challenging back-country routes await skiers of all abilities. A favorite destination is the summit of Lone Boulder Hill, where a large glacial boulder stands guard near a breathtaking 3 state vista. Don't let the lack of snow in your backyard fool you; high elevation here assures some of the best natural s

now conditions in Southern New England. Thirty years of constant refinement of the trail system and grooming equipment have resulted in great skiing, even when you'd least expect it. The emphasis in developing this exciting trail system has always been to blend exhilarating outdoor fun with a sensitivity towards the natural environment. The Guest Lodge

Hand-built and furnished almost entirely with wood harvested from our land, the Lodge has seven guest rooms, a large living room and a complete kitchen and dining room. Everywhere there are large windows taking in the magnificent view. Not exactly a hotel, motel or B&B, this place is in a unique category of its own. In keeping with our simple philosophy, overnight guests share bathrooms and bring their own sheets & blankets. All rooms have a double bed in them and most have a single or bunk bed as well. Rooms are decorated with original art, barn board, old farm implements, etc. The farmhouse across the street serves primarily as our residence. The “West End” has a separate entrance, a unit with three additional bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room and screened porch. Limited wireless internet available via satellite at no charge.

A bit of history. We first opened our trails in 1977. Having just moved here from Michigan, I had to get new plates for my 69 Dodge Power Wagon. The standard for marking trails at that time was a 2"x4" red rectangle. Not one to waste a perfectly good piece of aluminum, I cut the old plate into 2"x4" rectangles and painted them red. This piece of plate still shows the embossed "76" of the commemorative bicentennial Michigan plate. As the standard marking changed to 4x4 blue shortly thereafter, this dates this tag to the first year of operation.
It's still out there....try to find it sometime!

There's still 8-12 inches of solid snow pack out there with a couple inches of fresh snow from the past couple of days. I was out yesterday and noticed the track of a young bear at several points along the trail system. Then, as I am heading up to Lone Boulder Hill, I saw the tracks again. This time, they were dirty. As the snow was clean and there are no bare spots, I got curious so I followed them backwards and found the den that this bear had emerged from not 2 hours before. Only a few feet off of Shakey Knees!

Thin cover here today, especially under the conifers. I've packed about half of the trails but have not set track. The long range forecast doesn't call for a lot of snow but it would only take another inch or two to improve things dramatically. For almost 4 weeks now, open fields along the valleys out here have kept their base while ours has come and gone.

We have a consistent 4 - 5" of crunchy snow in the woods. this translates into 2 - 3" of very solid snow on the trails with a light coating of powder in the still visible tracks from last weekend. There are occasional rocks and roots exposed - stuff you can see and avoid for the most part. We may get a little more snow Friday and then we are expecting a warm up. I think if I try and groom I will expose more rocks so I'm not going to try now. There is the possibility of some decent skiing on Sat. as the temps start to warm and the snow starts to soften. Sunday looks like a rain-out tho. Stay tuned.

Interesting phenom...For the past week, the only groomed skiing in Western Mass that I have been aware of has been at Mohawk Trail Regional High School. This was due to an inversion during the "big melt" - cold air preserved the base as warm air melted us out. All this is now history as new snow falls!
