Always one of my favorite photos on Toledo Bend, for the nostalgia of it all. It tells such a story… about a massive lake created from the waters of the Sabine River in the 1960s in part for the recreation of it all. Louisiana (Sportsman’s Paradise) joined with Texas in the massive Toledo Bemd Dam project. Among other stories the photo tells: the lake filled a lot faster than planned or expected… much of the timber was not cut by the time heavy rains escalated the filling of the lake… and for the first few years of the lake’s existence, this photo illustrates the joy and pain of fishing the lake. Trolling motors got one from place to place as they carefully navigated the remains of forests which had covered the land which was now covered by the water… but the fishing was spectacular from what I have heard.

Please feel free to share stories (recalled or passed down) of fishing the lake in its early days. I love to hear these stories!

October 5, 1961
Apparently, someone had decided that the Sabine River wasn't a sufficient barrier between Louisiana and Texas, so Governor Jimmie Davis and Texas Governor Price Daniel posed for awkward photos at the groundbreaking of the Toledo Bend Dam today in 1961. The $60 million project had been in the planning stages for twelve years. Three years after the groundbreaking, construction of the dam, spillway, and power plant began in 1964. The closure section of the earthen embankment was begun in October 1966, and the power plant was completed in the early part of 1969. The Toledo Bend Project was constructed primarily for the purposes of water supply, hydroelectric power generation, and recreation. Toledo Bend is the nation's only public water and hydroelectric project undertaken without federal funding.
