Blue pool, bigger blue right behind it. The pool at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel sits at the edge of Hilo Bay.

Old shade trees, a few quiet loungers, and the water glassy on both sides. Not a crowded resort scene, just an easy place to spend a slow afternoon on the Big Island.

Bay on one side, pool on the other. Which one are you picking today?

A few minutes from Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, on the lawn in front of the Hilo Public Library, sit two stones that go back centuries.

The larger one is the Naha Stone, carried by canoe from Kauaʻi and used to confirm the chiefly bloodline of the Naha line. Legend said whoever could overturn it would unite the Hawaiian Islands. A young Kamehameha did, and went on to do exactly that.

Beside it stands the Pinao Stone, once part of a heiau near this spot.

It is an easy stop in downtown Hilo on Waiānuenue Avenue. The stones are sacred, so visitors are asked not to climb or sit on them.

Would you stop to see them?

Two queen beds, a private lānai over Hilo Bay, and coffee going before anyone else is up.

The Ocean Front Bedroom Suite gives you 848 square feet to actually settle into. A separate sitting area to spread out, two queens set apart for when the family comes along, and a lānai where the morning starts slow with the bay right in front of you.

There is Hawaiian Paradise coffee by the maker too, so the first cup is sorted before the day starts.

One of the more spacious ways to stay at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, and an easy one to settle into.

This is how Bull Shed Hilo marks National Seafood Month.

The lobster tail comes sliced and glossy under drawn butter, the calamari fried right with marinara alongside, and Hilo Bay sits just outside the window while you eat.

Executive Chef Ryan Brannigan runs the kitchen, and the plates show it.

Bull Shed Hilo is at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel on Banyan Drive, one of the few places on the Big Island where dinner comes with the bay this close.

Fall in Hilo looks a little different. No falling leaves, just warm halls, red and gold koi, and green that never quits.

The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel wears the season well. Come see October on the Big Island.

This is Hilo in the fall, and there is nowhere the island would rather have you.

The crowds thin out, the mornings stay warm, and Hilo Bay settles into that deep, still blue it seems to save for this time of year.

From above you can see the whole shape of it: the hotel curved along the point, palms leaning out over the lava rock, the footbridge reaching across to Mokuʻola.

A Hawaiʻi vacation does not have to mean rushing from one thing to the next. Some of the best days on the Big Island are the slow ones, spent close to the water with nowhere you need to be.

Turn on Do Not Disturb and escape to Hawaiʻi for a slow fall getaway.

September on Hilo Bay goes out quietly.

The season is shifting. The light is a little different, the evenings a little cooler, the bay a little more still.

There is something about this time of year in Hilo that is easy to miss if you are not paying attention.

The island does not announce itself. It just keeps being beautiful.

The Waiʻoli Lounge is not just a place to grab a drink.

The full lounge menu runs daily from 2:30pm to 9:00pm, with shared plates, burgers, sandwiches, and a full bar to go with it. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday with live music to match.

Come for a casual bite after a day of exploring Hilo, or settle in for an evening cocktail before dinner. The lounge has you covered either way.

Stop by and see what is on tonight.

The September equinox arrives this week, and Hilo marks it quietly.

The days and nights balance out for a moment, the light shifts just a little earlier, and the bay takes on a different quality in the evenings. If you have ever been in Hilo at this time of year you know what we mean.

There is something about the way September feels here that is hard to explain until you are standing on Banyan Drive watching the water change color as the sun goes down.

The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has been on this shoreline for over 50 years. Some things do not get old.

Planning a gathering in Hilo? This is the place.

The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel has been voted Best Banquet Facilities by the US Local Business Association and Best Hotel and Best Banquet and Reception Facilities by readers of the Tribune Herald.

Three flexible event spaces can accommodate everything from intimate corporate meetings to celebrations of 300 or more. The Mokuʻola Ballroom opens to a covered oceanfront breezeway, perfect for cocktail hours with Hilo Bay as the backdrop.

September is a great time to plan. Quieter, more accessible, and still warm enough to make the most of the outdoor spaces.
