The Big Island’s story continues… and once again, Kīlauea takes center stage! Known as one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kīlauea has entered another chapter—Eruption Episode 31—reminding us of the island’s living, breathing spirit.

Arnott's Lodge - Back to Where It All Began…

Long before Arnott’s Lodge became a favorite stop for adventurers from around the world, it started with just a simple dream and a lot of aloha. In the early days, our little lodge wasn’t about luxury—it was about community, exploration, and sharing the magic of Hilo with travelers who craved something real.

Picture this: a few cozy rooms, the sound of coqui frogs at night, and guests swapping stories under the Hawaiian sky. Backpackers, surfers, and dreamers from every corner of the globe came through our doors. Some stayed a night, others weeks, but all left as part of the Arnott’s ‘ohana.

We didn’t have fancy amenities back then, but we had heart. The spirit of adventure, the laughter of new friends, and the beauty of Hawai‘i made every moment unforgettable. 🌋🌌

Today, we’ve grown—but the heart of Arnott’s Lodge is still the same: affordable stays, authentic experiences, and a warm welcome to everyone who calls this place “home” for a while.

What to Expect on the Drive to the Maunakea Visitor Information Station (VIS) 🌄

Heading up Saddle Road toward the stars? Your journey to the Maunakea Visitor Information Station (located at 9,200 feet elevation) is part of the adventure! Here’s what to expect:

🛣️ Smooth but Steep Drive
The paved Saddle Road (Daniel K. Inouye Hwy) is in great condition, but the final stretch to the VIS is narrow, winding, and climbs quickly — drive with caution and go slow.

🌬️ Rising Elevation = Changing Weather
Expect cooler temperatures and thinner air as you ascend. Bring a jacket, even during the day — it gets cold up there!

🚻 Last Stop Before the Summit
The VIS has restrooms, water, parking, educational displays, and helpful rangers. It’s the perfect place to acclimate and learn about Maunakea before going any higher.

🚫 Note: Only 4WD vehicles are allowed beyond the VIS toward the summit — and it’s recommended you spend at least 30 minutes at the VIS to adjust to the altitude.

🏔️ Rugged Terrain Ahead
The final stretch to the summit is steep, rocky, and rough—only a 4-wheel‑drive vehicle (4WD) with high clearance should attempt it.

❄️ Cold Temperatures Await
At nearly 14,000 feet, temperatures can plummet—even in summer—so layers and proper clothing are essential.

📜 Access Rules & Permits
If you’re going beyond the visitor center or astronomy precinct, make sure you check any permits or vehicle regulations in advance.

🔭 Visitor Information Station (VIS)
Stop at the VIS (around 9,200 ft) for acclimatization, restroom access, and helpful orientation before ascending further.

🧭 Drive Responsibly
Follow trail signs, stick to official roads, and avoid unmarked routes to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem.
