Happy ! 🐢 We’re celebrating these ancient mariners as continues 🌊

If you didn't already know, loggerhead sea turtles are the main sea turtle species that nest on our beaches here on Hilton Head Island. They come back year-after-year to nest on our beaches, receiving protection and monitoring from the amazing team at Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head Island!

They've already recorded 170 nests so far since the beginning of nesting season in May. That's more nests by this time of year compared to the past three seasons — it looks like we're in for a record summer!

Did you know?

🐢 Loggerhead sea turtles got their name from their large, strong jaws that can bite through hard-shelled prey
🐢 They can hold their breath for very long periods of time, and often sleep underwater
🐢 They use the light of the moon to orient themselves (that's one of the reasons it's so important we turn off bright lights on the beach)
🐢 They laid 237 nests on our beaches during the previous 2025 season
🐢 Loggerheads are endangered. It's important to help in any way we can like using less plastic, producing less pollution, and supporting organizations like Sea Turtle patrol in helping their nests to survive year after year

Save this post for your next trip to Hilton Head Island during sea turtle nesting season 📌

If you're visiting from May through October, you just might be lucky enough to experience some of our cutest residents here on the island: our loggerhead sea turtles!

This , here are some reminders for ways you can help protect our nesting mothers and baby hatchlings during your visit to Hilton Head Island:

🐚 Put the beach to bed: Fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles on the beach at the end of your day, and take all your belongings with you when you leave

🌅 Turn off bright lights: Use only red flashlights if you're walking the beach at night, as sea turtles can only see this type of light dimly

🐢 Keep your distance: If you see a nesting turtle or hatchlings emerging from their nest, keep a good distance away so as not to disturb their natural processes

🎤 Attend a Turtle Talk: Amber Kuehn and the team and Sea Turtle Patrol host weekly free Turtle Talks all summer long so you can learn about nesting season and our local sea turtles.
