Historic Mitchelville celebrates opening of its New Archaeological Research Facility and Auditorium

The first-of-its-kind facility will help uncover, preserve and share the story of Mitchelville, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the US. It will serve as a hub for archaeological research and a gathering place where visitors can learn about this chapter in our island’s history. Hilton Head supports efforts that preserve and celebrate Gullah Geechee culture and heritage.

History and Mystique

The Haints of the South Carolina Lowcountry: History and Mystique
In the South Carolina Lowcountry, autumn nights bring whispers of haints, restless spirits from Gullah Geechee folklore believed to be trapped between worlds. Rooted in West African traditions, these spectral tales linger beneath moss-draped live oaks. To keep unwanted spirits at bay, locals rely on subtle protections: painting porch ceilings and doorframes a soft "haint blue" to mimic water (a natural barrier spirits cannot cross) and placing cobalt bottle trees in yards to trap wandering phantoms before the morning light destroys them. Read about more local spooks on the SC Lowcountry Haints page.
