Here is a question. Currently, our fiction collection is organized in the standard Dewey set up - alphabetized by author's last name. Which is the tried and true way...

Many libraries are now organizing their fiction by genre - horror, humor, romance, sci-fi etc... Within each genre the books are alphabetized by author's last name and there is a designation in the library catalog of the genre the book is categorized as (this will help students find the books.) The idea is intriguing to me for many reasons - the main reason - students are always asking us for books by genre.

Would this help give students a purpose when browsing? Would it be less overwhelming for students?

While it would be a ton of work on our part I think the benefits would outweigh the effort and time...thoughts?

A few years ago a student told me he hated to read. I asked him what he was looking for. He told me something gross and gory with blood and guts. Boy did I have the book for him - "Corpses, Coffins and Crypts: A History of Burial" by Penny Coleman. This book gives the history of how the burial process has changed through history and cultures. Do you know why we have wakes? Well, read the book and find out - you may be surprised.

The student not only took the book but never returned it...so we bought a new one.

"Corpses, Coffins and Crypts" is available at the Dr. Lorraine A. Sherwood Library.

Just finished reading Phineas Gage - A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science. Phineas Cage had a tamping iron blown through his head in the 1848 while on the job. He survived despite the fact the tamping iron took part of his skull and brain with it. Against the odds he survived when little was known about the brain and less was known about germs, bacteria and how it was spread. Remember, antibiotics were not on the scene for almost 100 years!

Though he survived his personality changed...thus, the start of many interesting conversations about the brain and how it works.

The book is available at the Dr. Lorraine A. Sherwood Library!

My brother in law recommended "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. Another book I cannot put down.

The main character August was born with a facial deformity and has been home schooled. He is entering the5th grade and going to school for the first time.

"Wonder" is told through various points of view - everyone tells August's story through their eyes. It is sure to make you laugh and cry! August is a great kid, he is bright and funny!

I am half way through and cannot wait to finish.
