The Cabins at Sandy Mush Bald offer guests an off-grid and authentic Appalachian experience at our hike-in cabins and campsites located on 500 private acres atop the Newfound Mountains in Western North Carolina! Appalachian homestead, reconstructed and refurbished, cabins along the beautiful Newfound mountain range just miles West of Asheville North Carolina. Cabins are located at 4800 feet, and t

he top of our property is Big Sandy Mush Bald, the joining point of 3 counties; Madison,Haywood and Buncombe County! From this vantage point you can see 360 degree (during Winter) 500 acres next to 1600 of forest preserve on our southern boarders. 7 springs, miles of trails to hike and explore. 2 Mountain Balds with various flowers that bloom like ocean waves across the ridges and ranges. It's worth hiking in gear and visiting for a weekend getaway. Off grid and rustic, but with almost all modern conveniences. The view from the main cabin porch is awe inspiring and the wood fire stove is used for heat and for cooking and baking. We’re a little over one month into this season, and we’re so glad to see everyone back on the mountain! We are always working on improvements around here, and we wanted to show you this wonderful breakfast bar in Cabin 1 conceived and created by Andrew. It sure is an upgrade from the dated couch and gives a bit of extra tabletop for those eating inside or just a place to hang in the kitchen.

Cabin One is essentially basecamp here at Sandy Mush Bald. It’s the first sight of reprieve to drop your gear, and the last cabin you see on the way out. It’s where you’ll find host Doug and resident mouser cat Lucy roaming and relaxing on the porch. Cabin 1 is loved by many, and cherished by all who step inside.

There’s a few things we especially love about Cabin 1. We love playing boardgames under candlelight until the stars are out. We love the vintage library and the hammock is out front to enjoy, reading with beautiful views. We love the sunrise over a cup of coffee on the swing. Mostly, we love the community and time spent with each and every one of you.

If you’re looking to host a group, or want a bit of extra space, Cabin 1 is available as your basecamp for adventure. There’s still some space in June for your crew!

June is here and only three more weeks until the official start of summer! We can expect the dawn chorus of migratory birds singing, warm nights under the stars, and adventures that make lifelong memories here at Sandy Mush Bald.

There is still some availability at our cabins and campsites throughout the month. If you’re looking for a bit of extra quiet, hike-in Thursday evening and stay through Saturday.
