Bundling kids up and sending them outside for winter play does more than burn off pent-up energy — it helps wire healthy, curious minds. ❄️

Author and Children & Nature Network co-founder Richard Louv has long argued that children’s retreat indoors fuels nature-deficit disorder, a loss of connection that can heighten stress, attention difficulties and other challenges.

In his book “Last Child in the Woods,” Louv suggests that time outdoors restores something essential. “When all five of a child’s senses come alive, a child is at an optimum state of learning,” Louv says. “Creativity and cognitive functioning go way up.”

New research backs him up. A 2025 study found that unstructured play in natural settings improves cognitive function and reduces attention fatigue.
