🐸 What would you caption this photo of this American Bullfrog enjoying your Three Forks Nature Center?
Did you know that the American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is the largest frog in the United States? Adults can reach 3.5-8 inches in length. Tadpoles can grow 4-7 inches and, in some regions, may overwinter for up to 3 years before completing metamorphosis!
Bullfrogs thrive in lakes, marshes, ponds, and slow-moving streams with plenty of vegetation for cover. Their range spans across the eastern half of the U.S., stretching from southern Canada into Mexico.
They are famously opportunistic, as they will eat nearly anything they can swallow - including small birds, mice, and even other bullfrogs.
Their deep call is often described as "jug-o-rum", and they produce a short squeal just before jumping, a helpful clue for distinguishing them from other species.
During the summer breeding season, males develop bright yellow throats, while females' remain white. Females also have a smaller tympanum (external eardrum). Males are highly territorial and may wrestle or attack intruding males. They also will lift their bodies to display their bright yellow gular sac.
Bullfrogs are active day and night, depending on temperature and habitat conditions. At night, their bright eyeshine can be spotted with a flashlight.
