Indian Lake Amusement Park

Sandy Beach Park
In 1924 S. L. “Pappy” Wilgus and his son, French, purchased seven acres of Cain’s Park at Indian Lake for the purpose of building an amusement park called Sandy Beach. The Park was an outgrowth of the Sandy Beach Bathing Resort the Wilgus family had run for several years at the Indian Lake.

The Wilgus Family built Sandy Beach into one of Ohio’s most popular parks and vacation sites. Sandy Beach boasted up-to-date roller coasters and other rides. The park offered a boardwalk that connected the park to the beach. In addition, the park also had a very popular dance pavilion, the Minnewawa. People from all over Logan County and surrounding states came to the “Million Dollar Playground” as the Sandy Beach Park and Indian Lake area became known, to enjoy the rides, water, and entertainment.

The Wilgus family expanded the possibilities of Sandy Beach by consolidating their interests with a New York firm that helped build Sandy Beach. Two years later they opened another amusement park in Fort Worth, Texas that French Wilgus operated. After the Minnewawa and several surrounding buildings and rides were destroyed or damaged by fire in 1936, The Wilgus family sold most of their interests in Sandy Beach Park to Charles Horvath and Louis W. Geiner, however, disagreements over the sale ended up going to court with Horvath and Geiner prevailing.

The new owners made several updates and changes to the park. A new skating rink was built in 1937. They also opened the new Moonlight Terrace Dance Pavilion.

The amusement park continued to be popular with visitors for several decades under its various owners. People still came from all over to ride the roller coasters, swim, or boat in the lake and to dance to many of the country’s most popular musicians at the dance pavilions.

In the 1960’s new owners and management emerged. The park’s name was changed to Indian Lake Playland in 1967. The state park’s new campground helped bring in more people to the area in the late 1960’s, but by the early 1970’s the end of the park was apparent.

The downfall of the park stemmed from a combination of factors, including the riots at Indian Lake in the late 1960s and early 70s, competition from larger amusement parks and other types of entertainment, and the deterioration of the park itself. Indian Lake Playland did not open for the 1976 season. After several years the park’s buildings and rides fell into disrepair.

Finally in August 1981 the park was razed. However, many Logan Countians and people from elsewhere who visited the “Million Dollar Playground” have many fond memories of the park that live on today.
