I wrote this song over the Thanksgiving weekend. Paula and I were at the theater, and I was heading down the hall to get to the screen when a man and his daughter came out of one of the theaters. She was excited about having spent the time with her dad and let out a squeal. He promptly slapped her across the face and told her to be quiet. She cried out, "Why did you do that?" Her joy was now buried beneath her curtain of tears. I wondered later what kind of person she would end up marrying. How will she treat her kids? What kind of love is being developed between her and her dad, and if any would be left, what form would it take? I could not help but wonder about how we treat each other overall? Would strangers earn better treatment? Why would they be any different from the family? I wrote the lyrics to reflect my heartfelt desire to learn to love like the Savior. From the heart of an adult who still is a child in His eyes. I hope you enjoy the message of this song.

Verse 1
Let me see them as You see them,
Tiny souls of Heaven’s light;
Let me hold them as You’d hold them—
With a tenderness that’s right.
For the world is loud and heavy,
And their hearts are soft and new…
Oh Lord, I’m just a mortal,
But I want to love like You.
Verse 2
Let my voice be calm and patient,
Let my hands be gentle, kind;
Let my anger fade to mercy,
Let compassion rule my mind.
For a child’s trust is fragile,
Like a dawn not fully through…
Oh Lord, I’m still learning,
But I want to love like You.
Chorus
Teach me to love with the heart of a child—
Pure in its wonder, forgiving and mild.
Teach me to cherish the moments they give,
To guide them with kindness, to show them to live.
Make me a shelter where peace can break through—
Oh Lord, for my children,
Teach me to love like You.
Verse 3
When their tears fall without warning,
When their fears are hard to say,
When the shadows steal their laughter,
Give me words to light their way.
Let me kneel in quiet sorrow
When I fail to follow through…
Lift me up with Your forgiveness,
As I try to love like You.
Chorus
Teach me to love with the heart of a child—
Trusting and tender, unbroken, unstyled.
Teach me to listen when silence is deep,
To guard all the dreams they can’t say while they sleep.
Let my mistakes be the lessons You use—
Oh Lord, for my children,
Teach me to love like You.
Bridge
If the world would wound them early,
Make our home a holy place—
Where the warmth of Heaven lingers
In the light upon their face.
Let them grow to know their value,
Every day and season through…
And let them say, “My father tried—
He tried to love, just like You.”
Final Chorus (soft and prayerful)
Teach me to love with the heart of a child…
Simple and honest, not hardened or wild.
Teach me to lead with a Savior’s embrace,
With mercy that mirrors the light of Your face.
For all that I am, and all that I do—
Lord, for my children,
Teach me to love like You.

And when I falter on the path they walk through…
Hold them close, and hold me too—
As I, learn to love like You.
Oh, Teach me… Oh, Teach me… Oh, Teach me,
Teach me to love like You.
