KEYS TOURISM ADVISORY

This advisory is based on information and instructions from the National Hurricane Center, Key West National Weather Service Office and Monroe County Emergency Management.

Florida Keys Not Included in Tropical Storm Watch for Portion of Florida East Coast

Official National Hurricane Center 3-day forecast track issued at 5 p.m., Thursday, July 30.

The National Hurricane Center’s Thursday 5 p.m. forecast leaves the Florida Keys out of a tropical storm watch issued for a portion of Florida that extends from Sebastian Inlet in Brevard County to just north of Ocean Reef, according to Jon Rizzo, the warning coordination meteorologist for the Florida Keys National Weather Service office.

Forecasters believe that Tropical Storm Isaias, now projected to strengthen into a hurricane Friday, is to pass well to the east of the Keys on Saturday.

The storm is likely to have some influence on the Keys’ weather beginning late Friday night, with increased chances of rain and brisk winds especially in the Upper Keys, Rizzo said. He added that a small craft advisory is likely to be issued for coastal waters off a portion of the Keys.

Keys visitors and residents are encouraged to continue monitoring the storm’s progress in the event of changes to the forecast track, wind field and intensity.

No Watches or Warnings for the Florida Keys related to Tropical Storm Isaias.

Islamorada is coordinating with the Monroe County Emergency Management team and the National Weather Service Key West to monitor Tropical Storm Isaias and any potential local impacts.

An eastward shift of the forecast track decreases the probabilities that the Florida Keys will experience Sustained Tropical Storm Force Winds. Key Largo and Ocean Reef are more likely to experience a few squalls and possible tropical storm force wind gusts. Those in Islamorada and further west should be prepared for windy and rainy weather beginning Saturday morning.

Everyone is advised to secure items outdoors that may blow around and make sure boats are secure or removed from the water.

To provide additional options for boaters to remove their boats from the water, Islamorada will open the ramps at Indian Key Fill (MM 78.5 bayside) and Blackwood (MM 81.9 bayside) beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday. The ramps will be open for 24-hours.

Because there is some uncertainty in the forecast tack and intensity, everyone is urged to stay advised as forecasts are updated later today and Friday. This is also a reminder to review your hurricane checklists, disaster plans, family communication plan and make sure your emergency supply kits are up to date for hurricane season.
