Railroad Regulator Clock Donated to Hotel
We want to thank the Fox Family for donating this impressive Regulator Clock to the hotel for public display. It is located in the 1st-floor corridor, barely clearing the 10-foot ceiling. There is a photo of the known history on display below. The height of these unusually tall clocks was for ease of viewing in public spaces.
It had been stored for years, and the big question was: Would it run? First, we accessed the works and lightly oiled the bearings. The case was set up and made perfectly level, and it would NOT run. We found there was an adjustment high on the pendulum to change the escapement mechanism for a perfect beat. This clock uses a pin-wheel escapement, and you can visually see where to set it, much easier than with most clocks.
With it running now, the next question is: How accurate will it keep time? There are two adjustments on the weighted end of the pendulum, one for fine-tuning and the other for very fine-tuning. There are markings on the adjustments, but we have no instructions as to their value in changing the time. It was trial and error.
Do you believe in luck? After the fourth adjustment, it has been running for 10 days and remains accurate to the second! That was luck, not expertise on our part. Only time will tell if the heavy mercury-filled pendulum compensates for changes in temperature as designed. Using our steam heat during the winter allows the corridors to fluctuate in temperature.
We hope all future guests enjoy this added display at the Jerome Grand Hotel.
