TOOOOOOOO MUCH FOR WORDS

Who was it said that a picture is worth thousand words? Ain’t that the truth! See for yourselves as we start with a rare lobster and shrimp fest at TSH.

Our very dapper deer friend, Buttons (in tribute to the nubbins that will become antlers), makes another appearance entering the stage from the Maid’s Suite Back patio!?!

And, he returns for a nightcap!

Butterflies, Bees, Dragons, and Passion all speak for themselves.
. . AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH . . .

TALK ABOUT A HUM-DINGER, OR TWO!

This week saw Fiona Pappillon up to some nonsense having captured this 8” lizard, species unknown, but a homerun on the color spectrum. It wasn’t injured albeit feigning death when Joshua discovered the near-crime scene. Luckily, Fi gave in quickly and the not-so-little guy survived. Check out his turquoise cravat and vest – pretty snazzy and uptown, right?

Regrettably, we don’t see nearly as many hummingbirds as in years past so when Joshua stumbled onto a little lady building her nest in the pear tree near the outdoor shower, we reacted like grandparents-to-be. We showed you the nest 2 weeks ago and now lo-and-behold, our little gal gave us 2 eggs and the hatching of 2 of the tiniest creatures you can imagine.

The interior diameter of her nest is barely 1 & 1/4” and now holds 2 babes that look like miniature dinosaurs. Their little heads are just a tad larger than a matchstick head but smaller than a Q-Tip, and they sport a modicum of feather spuds. We won’t be sneaking peeks for a while until they get stronger so as not to upset mom and dad but rest assured we will be vigilant from a distance. By the way, were y’all aware that from DAYBREAK THROUGH SUNDOWN, mom and dad share feeding duties of their brood every 15 minutes! It won’t be long before these babes will quadruple in size and be ready to fledge.

On an equally exquisite yet humbling note, our zinnias are beginning to make what we intend will be an eye-popping show this year and we aren’t the only ones taking notice. Again, not unlike our ignorance of the lizard variety, we don’t know who this resplendent butterfly creature is, but there is no question about how they are in a mutual admiration pact with the zinnias.

MAKING DUST WHILE THE SUN SHINES . . . ?

Oh brother, is this a testimony to my phrase “If you are going to make a mess, make a good one!” Well, we surely succeeded. We have taken this opportunity to remove and refinish the gouges in the dining room floor created by ill-fitting chair and table leg booties with a little help from stilettos. The first step was to clear the room before sanding. Furniture ended up in the side yard and everywhere EXCEPT the dining room. As an aside, seeing my home like this makes me nearly apoplectic I tell you.

The final chores included refinishing of the thresholds between the kitchen and backdoor and then the refinishing and FILLING the threshold of the dining room patio doors.

Significant weather damage on the outside threshold required filling with wood putty and apoxy.

We failed to anticipate the magnitude of dust so we did not tape off the room resulting in a massive ceiling-to-floor dusting project including every individual piece of whatever objects & furniture in all of the main floor – whew!

A final coat of the same professional sealer that Paul used when we redid all the floors and we were back in business. We actually applied three costs with heavy product concentration in the areas most distressed by sanding out the gouges. Strangely enough, this product has a nearly elastic feel when dried and thoroughly cured which requires 3 days. Every time we do this I proclaim that ‘. . . this is my last time . . .’ but fully realizing that this old gal needs her gams looking just right!

ROLLING INTO JUNE!

As difficult as it is to believe, here we find ourselves rolling right into the halfway mark of this year – can that even be possible? This month is revealing all varieties of Mother Nature’s splendors and wonders. Aren’t these little guys just soooooo stinking cute for about ONE MINUTE?

Speaking of ‘stinking’ cute, this appears to be another youngster perhaps progeny of the stinker that seems to have set up housekeeping under the honey shack.

Not to be outdone, our honeybees are busy with the zinnias and the nasturtiums that are overflowing the Chauffeur’s Quarters raised beds and tumbling down the garage roof.

Our spiders are helping the ponds by creating their lairs above the ponds to capture their ‘larder’ thereby cutting down on stuff falling into the ponds. Each one of those dots on the web is a tiny insect they have caught. Amazing, no?

And finally, the crème de le crème for the first time this season, a youngster buck (notice the beginnings of this horn nubbins) wetting his whistle just moments before Joshua showed up this morning. We are hoping he returns and brings his friends. All-in-all, our hats are off to what June is bringing to the table!

‘MAY’ WE CHECK IN WITH?

May on the mountain is simply exquisite – perhaps the month of May at its zenith! – so we want to give you a fun glimpse of what’s waiting for you, starting with our first spotting of a new hummingbird nest in one of our pear trees. Joshua spied a female youngster zooming about when he found the nest so we are hoping this is her first marvelous attempt at setting up housekeeping and it will soon be populated with two eggs and then . . . magic.

Dichondra starting in the south garden patio and fauna fun at the local feeding station and watering hole.

The Surgeon's House: A Place of Healing

On a very personal note: My home has served as a place of healing since
its construction. The chief surgeons healed uncounted citizens, and many have found a healing sanctuary here since. Many years ago our famous and beloved tamale ladies cooked 350 tamales in my kitchen, more than once I believe. A few years ago, my kitchen catered Katie Lee and Joey Van Luewen’s memorial dinner for 100 folks at Spook Hall. Many events and wedding receptions have been served from here.

So, supporting the food bank in our wild ride of prepping, cooking, bagging, labeling, freezing and returning to the food bank what we collect every week – BLESS THE VOLUNTEERS AND THE CHURCH FOR KEEPING IT OPEN – is nothing more than fulfilling our small part in the legacy of kitchen service that this home holds. The beautiful folks who man the food bank (Liz, Ann, Pastor Vicki and so many more) and those who are saving and donating containers are the real HEROES. We ((Joshua, Khristyanna, Tara, Kirt, and myself) are simply the lucky behind-the-scenes folks who get to do it, and we’re thankful for the opportunity to contribute!

Thank you all for participating and come visit us soon. . . Andrea and Crew at the Surgeon’s House

ABSOLUTELY NOT TO BE OUTDONE . . . 🌺🌸🌼🌷🪻

Considering all the critter action in the gardens recently, guess who is putting their resplendent feet forward? The fleured folks won’t be upstaged so they are showing us their finest as well. With the PREmonsoons, things actually appear to just ‘pop’ overnight
