From December to May, Hawaiʻi becomes home for migrating koholā or humpback whales. Nearly two-thirds of the North Pacific population travels more than 3,000 miles from Alaska to breed, calve and nurse in Hawaiʻi’s warm, shallow waters.
Their jumps and tail slaps are spectacular to watch, and humpbacks hold deep cultural significance for Native Hawaiians, appearing in legends and petroglyphs and regarded by some as ʻaumakua, or family guardians.

The ‘Au‘au Channel between Maui and Lānaʻi is one of the best places in the world to see them, with great viewing spots also found on Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and the island of Hawaiʻi. Boat tours keep a respectful 100 yard distance, and whales are often visible from shore, so keep your binoculars close.
