My Star Vacation Rentals

My Star Vacation Rentals Welcome to My Star Vacation Rentals! We presently have two of the most outstanding rentals in the ar That was understatement. John also loves to create stuff.

When we married 34 years ago John told me “We may never be rich, but I promise you we will never be bored!”. Once in awhile, I confess, I just want to be a little bored. Life is always an adventure in our family. Recreating this home has been no exception. John loves to travel, and got me hooked. So even though we are both native Utahns, we try and see some part of the world every chance we get. A

n artist at heart! So building the Western Star has been a combination of loves. Attempting to see travel through your eyes as we have created the bungalow has been almost as fun as going somewhere new ourselves. If you have a hankerin’ to talk about old cars or Rat Fink, give John a call. If you’d rather talk about creating costumes or quilts, Sherene is your gal. We both enjoy ATV riding, back country hiking and old movies. We live in the small town of Mt. Pleasant, four hours North of Kanab. We have always loved this southern part of the state, done lots of backpacking here, and were thrilled when we had the chance to purchase this home in Kanab at the end of 2015. We have 4 grown children and 3 grandchildren. Life is good! We are excited to have you come and share some of the great sites that southern Utah has to offer. Cheers, Sherene

Most people plan their southern Utah trip around the parks, the trails, and the kids' school calendar. 📅

The moon is usually not part of that conversation at all, and it should be. 🌙

A full moon washes out the Milky Way almost as much as city lights, and it can happen without anyone realizing it until they are already here.

🌠Have you ever seen stars like this?

John and I stepped outside last Tuesday to take out the trash and ended up standing in the dark for a good twenty minutes just staring up. 🌌

That is the thing about living out here. You never really get used to it.

We just walk outside. That is all it takes. And if you have never really seen a full night sky before, this is the place to find out what you have been missing.

There are only a few places like this on the planet! 🌍

Bryce Canyon is one of only a handful of places that scores a light pollution rating of Bortle 2, the second darkest sky category that exists. 🌠

Most visitors spend the whole day on the rim trails and head to bed before dark, but that’s just when the show is getting started.

😮 People who come to the national parks just for day visits miss half the show.

All five national parks in this region carry official dark sky certification, and two of them hold the Gold Tier designation, the highest level on the planet. 🌌

Swipe through to see what that means, and check the first comment for a local guide that goes a little deeper into where to stay and what to do when you get here. ⬇️

Fact about Southern Utah you should know before planning a trip:

Bryce Canyon sits at 8,000 feet elevation. On the same day Zion National Park hits 100 degrees, Bryce can be only 80. 🌡️

That means…check the weather forecast. On your hottest days, Bryce is where you want to be. Save Zion for an early morning start when the canyon is still cool. 🏜️

It sounds like a small adjustment but building your family road trip days around that temperature difference can make the whole thing more comfortable.

Most families picking a place to stay for a Southern Utah trip go straight to the town closest to the park they are most excited about. 🎉

That makes sense until you see what it actually costs per night. 💸

The real average nightly rates for every gateway town near Zion, Bryce, and the North Rim matter if you’re traveling on a budget.

The difference between the most expensive and least expensive option can run $100 to $250 more per night. On a four-night trip that is a lot of money that could go toward meals, gear, or another day out. 🤔

Before you plan a trip to Southern Utah in July, these are the things you need to know.

🌡️ It is hot. Zion National Park fills up fast and the heat hits harder than most people expect.

📅 Bryce Canyon and Zion both have crowd calendars right on their websites. Make sure to check them.

🏕️ The Grand Canyon North Rim roads reopen May 15 for day visits, but in-park lodging is not available this season. Plan your home base accordingly.

I send out insider tips like these every month in my newsletter. You will not find this kind of info in outdated influencer guides. I’ve left the details for you in the first comment. 🔽

Orderville and Mt. Carmel sit right between Zion and Bryce Canyon… and almost nobody thinks to stay there. 🤨

But what really sets them apart is that they have the kind of stays you will not find anywhere else. 🛏️.

Treehouses, yurts, stargazer, or glamping stays are a few of the things you can find there if you want a truly different experience. 🌵

We share this kind of Southern Utah insider knowledge every month in our newsletter. If you want those updates straight from locals, you can sign up in the comments. ⬇️

Booking the closest possible spot to the park feels like the safe decision. But most families doing a multi-park trip end up wishing they had a little more flexibility. ☹️

Any town right next to one park is far away from the others, and that means a long time in the car to go see something else. 🚙

So, if a trail is closed, or the weather turns, or the kids are done hiking by noon, and you are looking for something else to do, it's good to have options.

Staying in a real town (not a tourist trap) gives you those options. 🏘️

Swipe through for the honest tradeoff breakdown. Plus we’ve put together an insider’s list of those other options that you can get for free in the first comment. 🔽
