🌉 In 1882 they built what was then the tallest railroad bridge in the world across a valley in McKean County, and in 2003 a tornado took down half of it in about thirty seconds.

The Kinzua Viaduct stood over 300 feet above Kinzua Creek and stretched more than 2,000 feet across. It was rebuilt in steel in 1900 and carried trains for decades, then excursion trains, then nothing. It was in the middle of a restoration when a tornado came up the valley in July 2003 and knocked most of the towers flat. Investigators later found the anchor bolts had rusted through, and the structure went over sideways.

What the state did next is the reason to go. Rather than clear it away, they turned the surviving half into a walkway that runs out over the gorge and simply stops, with a partial glass floor at the end so you can look straight down at the wreckage of the other half lying in the trees below. It is unsettling in the best way. Go in the first half of October and the whole valley underneath you is on fire with color. 🍂
