Turns out KC has been sitting on the world's most famous escape route this whole time. 🎩

On September 8, 1915, Harry Houdini was strapped into a straitjacket by police, hoisted about 20 feet in the air at 10th and Main, and wriggled free in front of a crowd KCUR reports at roughly 5,000 people. It was the first suspended straitjacket escape he ever did, and he went on to perform 78 more of them around the world.

That corner is finally getting a historical marker. Local chapters of the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians unveil it Friday, September 11 at 2 p.m. in the courtyard at 10th and Main, with a proclamation from Mayor Quinton Lucas naming September 2026 Harry Houdini Month and a live straitjacket escape by magician Lance Rich. Houdini historian John Cox also speaks on his KC connections at the Central Library on Wednesday, September 9 at 6 p.m.
