From The Key From The Key West Department Of This S**t Is Serious…..
THEY'RE COMING FOR THE CHICKENS, Y'ALL. 🐓🚨
Let's be real.
These chickens are the SOUL of Key West.
They've survived hurricanes. Tourists. Drunk tourists. REALLY drunk tourists.
And now some bureaucrats want to "manage" them out of existence.
With EUTHANASIA.
(Translation: murder the damn chickens.)
Why? Because a few people complained about some chicken s # on their fancy new shoes.
Look...
I get it. Chickens aren't perfect neighbors. They're loud. They p**p. They have ZERO respect for traffic laws.
But they're OUR loud, p**ping, jaywalking feathered citizens.
They've been strutting these streets for over 100 YEARS.
Which means they were here LONG before most of us showed up.
And I know many of you are out of town right now…
(Same here) I'll be out of town, and can't make it to the City Commission meeting this Wednesday…
📍 City Hall - 1300 White Street
🗓️ Wednesday, June 4th
⏰ 5:00 PM (Come early if you can)
Good news: You can STILL help from wherever you are.
Here's how:
1️⃣ Sign the petition RIGHT NOW: https://www.change.org/p/support-the-preservation-of-key-west-s-chicken-culture
(Already has 905 signatures but we need MORE)
There are 111,000 of you following this page.
(And, WE CAN Crush These Numbers)
People who've taken pics with these birds.
Who've laughed at roosters crowing at 3am.
Who've watched mama hens parade their babies down Duval.
We only need 1,000 signatures to make a statement.
2️⃣ Make these calls (even a 30-second voicemail matters):
• Brian L. Barroso (City Manager): 305-809-3954
• Lissette Carey (Commissioner): 305-809-3844
• Ryan Waterhouse (Assistant City Attorney): 305-809-3872
• Aaron Castillo (Commissioner): 305-809-3844
• Denise Henriquez (Mayor): 305-809-3840
The message is simple: "LEAVE THE CHICKENS ALONE."
3️⃣ Share this post with EVERYONE you know who loves Key West
4️⃣ If you have friends still on the island, BEG them to show up at City Hall (1300 White Street) this Wednesday at 5PM
Look, these birds aren't just Instagram props.
They control pests naturally. They're living history. They're part of what makes this island special.
If we start treating our island traditions like problems to be "managed away"...
What's next?
Please help however you can. Even from afar.
Because once they're gone, they're gone.
