Fantasy Fest turns Old Town inside out, and it is worth seeing at least once, from the middle of it.

The part nobody plans for is the after. Walking a few blocks, through a gate, into nearly an acre of gardens where the noise simply stops. Up a private elevator. Onto a rooftop where the island is a view rather than a crowd.

Art Deco, 1951. Built when Key West was modernising and a power station was worth making beautiful.

The four-year restoration finished in 2008 kept what mattered: the steel geometry, the scale, the facade lines, the proportions of a building designed to hold turbines rather than furniture. What went in around them is modern. What holds them up is original.

A few things worth knowing.

There are nineteen residences in the building, not two hundred. Each has its own private elevator, so there are no shared hallways. Each has a private rooftop terrace and plunge pool. Dogs are welcome. Boat slips are available next door at Conch Harbor Marina for vessels from thirty-five to a hundred and ninety-five feet.

And the minimum stay is twenty-eight days because this is a residence, not a room.

When the sun goes down, Old Town comes alive: candlelit courtyards, live music drifting off Duval, a nightcap under the banyan trees. The finest part of dining out here is the walk home: past the seaport, through the gardens, up your own private elevator. The whole island for dinner, and somewhere quiet to return to.
