Shown in this postcard from the ‘40s is the Continental Hy-way Motel, at 3129 Foothill, just east of Pennsylvania. This was one of a string of motels along Foothill Boulevard, which at that time was State Highway 118. The Maylane (now La Crescenta Motel) at Foothill and Briggs is the last surviving example.
Fun fact about this postcard image… The mountains in the background are not our mountains! At this period of postcard production, color photo images were still not used for cheap postcards like this. Instead a black-and-white image was painted over by an artist, usually working in whatever city the printer was located in. The base photo may have been taken on a hazy day, when the new phenomenon “smog” was just beginning to obscure our foothills. The artist had most likely never seen the San Gabriels, so instead just inserted some made-up ridgeline.
The area that the Continental Hy-way Motel once occupied is now a mix of retail mini-malls and apartments directly across Foothill from Ace Hardware.
