A magnificent harvest turkey takes center stage, surrounded by miniature pumpkins, colorful gourds, Indian corn, and
overflowing cornucopias.

Rich autumn hues complement the mansion’s historic woodwork, while the glow of the fireplace evokes the gracious hospitality of a bygone era.

In a home built in 1892, Thanksgiving is more than a holiday—it is a celebration of tradition, beauty, and the simple pleasures of gathering around the table.

The Reception Parlour Fireplace

Holway Mansion | La Crosse, Wisconsin | 1892

Occupying a place of prominence within the mansion’s formal reception parlour, this monumental fireplace embodies the elegance, craftsmanship, and social refinement of the American Gilded Age.

The richly carved wooden mantel rises into an imposing mirrored overmantel, crowned with an elaborate composition of classical urns, flowering vines, scrolling foliage, and ornamental moldings. Its architectural proportions and intricate detailing reflect the Renaissance Revival influence that flourished in fashionable American interiors during the late nineteenth century.

The expansive mirror was particularly appropriate to a formal reception parlour, where guests were welcomed and entertained. Reflecting the room’s chandeliers, decorative furnishings, and architectural woodwork, it heightened the impression of spaciousness and grandeur.

The pale glazed tile surrounding the firebox contrasts beautifully with the warm woodwork, while an intricately ornamented metal fire basket completes the composition.

Unlike the more intimate family rooms of the mansion, the formal reception parlour was intended to communicate hospitality, culture, and social standing. Its fireplace was therefore more than a functional furnishing—it was a carefully composed architectural centerpiece designed to impress visitors.

A remarkable survival of nineteenth-century decorative artistry, this fireplace continues to convey the sophistication and grandeur of the Holway family’s original residence.

Rich architectural woodwork, graceful proportions, and carefully orchestrated decorative details distinguish this intimate interior of Castle La Crosse.

The room’s commanding architectural centerpiece is an elaborately carved wooden surround framing an oval window. Its intricate ornamentation, classical detailing, and warm finish reflect the craftsmanship and artistic ambitions of the late Victorian era. Flanking windows provide natural light, while substantial wood casings and decorative corner blocks reinforce the room’s architectural richness.

Above, a delicate blue-and-gold ornamental frieze encircles the ceiling, introducing a sense of refinement and visual harmony. The interplay of polished wood, soft wall colors, and decorative plasterwork creates an atmosphere that is both dignified and inviting.

The furnishings and collected objects evoke the layered, comfortable interiors of an affluent nineteenth-century residence, where architectural beauty and domestic life were intended to coexist.
