Wa‘a Kiakahi returned to Kāʻanapali last weekend 🌊⛵

This annual celebration honors Hawaiian sailing canoes and the enduring legacy of voyaging across Hawaiʻi’s waters.

Crews sailed from Kahului Harbor to the shores of Kāʻanapali Beach, carrying forward the ancient skills, knowledge, and values of traditional ocean navigation. Their arrival was marked by a beautiful welcoming ceremony on the shoreline, celebrating their safe passage and the living traditions of Hawaiian wayfinding.

Mahalo to the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association for preserving and sharing this important cultural practice, and to the crews who continue to bring the story of the canoe to life.

Over the past few days we proudly celebrated World Oceans Day with three events - Ocean Voyage: A Wa‘a Experience, Sailing with Purpose and Kāʻanapali Beach clean up!

Thank you to all our guests and hosts who came out to learn more about what makes our ocean so special and help keep it clean so we can enjoy it for generations to come.

Everything seems clearer on the Pacific Ocean. 🌊

To celebrate World Oceans Day, we invited guests to two events - Ocean Voyage:
A Wa‘a Experience and Sailing with Purpose. Ocean explorers were invited aboard a wa‘a (Hawaiian sailing canoe) and catamaran across two days for meaningful hands-on experiences led by Ocean Academy and OUTRIGGER’s cultural specialists.

What a beautiful, impactful way to learn about and celebrate our oceans.

We rolled up our sleeves, got a little sandy, and removed trash from a community Kāʻanapali Beach clean up today, in honor of World Oceans Day. No matter how small, every piece of trash picked up makes a difference for our islands. Thank you to all who participated in keeping our community clean!
