While walking along Ka‘anapali Beach, we captured a special moment, a Hawaiian monk seal resting peacefully on the sand. These endangered marine mammals are found only in Hawaiʻi, and seeing one is a rare privilege!

As of 2025, there are about 1,600 Hawaiian monk seals, roughly 1,200 in the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and 400 around the main islands like Maui.

Always stay at least 50 feet away. Getting too close can stress the animal or disrupt its natural behavior. Use a zoom lens for photos and admire quietly from a distance.

Encounters like this remind us how important it is to protect Hawaiʻi’s unique wildlife. Maui No Ka Oi! (Maui is the best!)
