Koholā | Full documentary | Nature Without Borders Award Winner
The devastating Lahaina wildfires left a scar on our community, a deep wound that seemed to mirror the devastated landscape. Yet, even in the midst of profound loss, nature offered a poignant reminder of resilience. As the smoke cleared and the ocean calmed, the koholā, the humpback whales, returned.
For the Hawaiian people, the koholā are more than just magnificent creatures; they are ‘amakua, guardians, and symbols of enduring hope. ‘Koholā’ is a film born from this moment, a look at the cultural significance of these whales and their profound connection to our ancestral roots. I sought to capture not only the awe-inspiring beauty of these majestic beings, but also the deeper meaning they hold for a community in the process of healing.
‘Koholā’ explores how their annual return reaffirms the strength of Hawaii’s cultural heritage and provides a pathway towards recovery. It is a story of resilience, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Hawaiian people, and a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable loss, hope and healing can rise from the depths of the ocean.”
Following its world premiere at the Santiago Wild Film Festival and a successful international tour, the film is now available here for all to watch for free.
