Oh my goodness, are these amorous sharks? It sure appears so. I suspect the larger whitetip reef shark is a male given he has claspers. The smaller one is female given she does not 🙂 He seems to be chasing her for awhile and then she chases him. Pretty amazing site. I was in 91' of water yesterday on the Backwall at Molokini Crater in Maui. I'm not a shark expert by any means, but it's fun to think they were digging each other 😉

I was diving in Molokini Crater today in Maui and was utterly stricken by this amazing cooperative hunting display. The two bluefin trevalley (one has changed color to black which, reportedly, helps with camouflage and signals to others his aggressive demeanor), a peacock grouper, and a yellowmargin moray eel are all acting together while hunting the reef. The eel moves in and out of the coral while the other hunters remain above his location ready to sn**ch anything the eel chases out. We were in about 65 to 70 feet of crystal clear water. Had a wonderful morning diving with Lahaina Divers Maui :-)

Moray eel delight! The first two photos are of the Giant Moray eel we saw a few days ago. These bad boys are huge! Full sized they can be nearly 8 feet long and weigh 77 pounds. Wow. Thank you to Erica from Lahaina Divers Maui for this rare sighting while diving the southern coast of Lana'i.

The others are photos of eels we saw over the past few days diving the Molokini crater. I'm using underwater lights for the first time. How did I do?

This is a fascinating example of cooperative hunting on a reef. I observed this behavior a couple days ago at Molokini Crater when diving Reef's End drift dive outside the crater with Lahaina Divers Maui. This bluefin trevally and two white mouth moray eels (light coloration) are working together. (A trumpetfish is also following along.) The eels are moving through the coral trying to chase prey out while the trevally is waiting to attack. Amazing. (I apologize for the overly red color. I was using a new set of filters and this one was recommended for depths of 50 feet or greater. I was at around 60 feet for this video.) At the end of the second video the eel coincidentally comes upon me, but decides I'm too large of prey and moves on :-) But he does give me the once-over!

We had a terrific dinner tonight at Roy's Ka'anapali. Jeri had the macadamian nut crusted monchong (a delectable local deep sea fish) and I had the filet mignon. Wonderful service, tasty drinks, and an amazing chocolate souffle desert. The 20 year old Fonseca port was exquisite :-) Check out Roy's the next time you're in Maui.

Hammerhead sharks! There is such a variety of scuba diving sites around Maui. It's a diver's paradise :-) Dove with this bad boy off the eastern coast of the island of Molokai today. We were lucky enough to see approximately 17 of these wonderful sharks during two dives with HammaheadJoe and
Lahaina Divers Maui. Sorry for all of the blue color, but that's what it looks like that far under the water. We were approximately 65 feet deep here and the shark was deeper yet. The red filter on my camera can only correct for so much blue. Great visibility under the water, though. I would have liked to get much closer to the sharks but they're skittish :-) These sharks blend perfectly with this background, don't they? They just fade away into the blue as they swim off.

How rare and fantastic! A pod of pilot whales, or so called "False Killer Whales," joined us for a time off the south shores of Lana'i today. Wow, are they big...and fast. These pilot whales are riding the wake in front of our boat. They remind me of the spinner dolphins that rode with us some months ago in nearly the same area (some video footage from that encounter can be found on this FB page). Fun fact: Pilot whales aren't actually whales but are dolphins. We went for three wonderful dives this morning and early afternoon with Lahaina Divers Maui.
