📍Laurel, MS
The John Lindsey Home was built in 1907 for entrepreneur John Lindsey. Before settling down in Laurel, Lindsey operated a sawmill near the railroad in Sandersville, where he invented a specialized wagon designed to transport logs more efficiently to the mill. The sawmill was destroyed by fire and that’s when he relocated to Laurel and shifted his focus entirely to manufacturing wagons.
He founded the Lindsey Log Wagon Company and, around the same time, built this beautiful home. His business grew into Mississippi’s largest employer at its peak, with Lindsey’s wagons becoming known far beyond the state’s borders.
Those wagons proved useful for much more than hauling timber. During World War I, they were even shipped to France, where they were used to transport heavy military equipment. If you’re ever in Laurel, you can see one of the original Lindsey wagons on display at the 1st National Bank Building.
Today, the John Lindsey Home has been beautifully preserved and is known as Grandiflora, a charming bed and breakfast.
