In the 1930s, the "L" on the mountain above Lava Hot Springs was established as a high school project when the community still had its own high school. Students cleared the mountain brush and arranged rocks to form the "L".
In the 1960s, lights were added to the mountain after a group of high school alumni collected funds, and volunteers installed the electrical system.
Today, the "L" is maintained by the City of Lava Hot Springs, with assistance from local volunteers.
The lighted “L” on the mountain serves as a welcoming beacon for both visitors and residents, symbolizing community pride and offering a familiar landmark visible throughout the valley.🥰
Lava Hot Springs East KOA is located at the base of the "L" mountain along the bank of the Portneuf River. If you haven't camped here or stayed in one of the cabins, you should seriously consider it.
