TLE and TQSE are NOT the same entitlement. One is for the uniform. One isn’t.

If you’re a DoD civilian on PCS orders who keeps getting handed military TLE paperwork, that’s why none of your numbers or timelines line up. Here is the actual breakdown:

TLE (Temporary Lodging Expense)
• Who: Uniformed service members on a CONUS PCS
• Coverage: Up to 14 days standard (up to 21 days authorized in designated housing-shortage areas)
• Reference: Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) par. 050601

TQSE (Temporary Quarters Subsistence Expense)
• Who: Federal civilian employees on a PCS
• Coverage: Up to 60 days, extendable up to 120 days with a compelling reason and agency approval
• Reference: Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) 41 CFR § 302-6

Another important detail for civilians: updated FTR guidance relies on the Lodgings-Plus method, sunsetting the old Lump Sum / Fixed Amount option.

Both entitlements serve the same practical purpose: covering temporary lodging while you wait on permanent housing.

I saw it in my rearview mirror.

Twenty-five years ago this morning, I dropped my boss off at the Pentagon. I was crossing the 14th Street Bridge when it happened.

I kept driving to the Navy Yard and watched the rest of the day unfold from there.

One of the longest days of my life. The most frightened and confused I have ever been. No social media then, just the news, running around the clock, for a week straight.

Some of you remember exactly where you were standing. Some of you were too young to remember, and enlisted anyway.

Today I'm thinking about the people who didn't come home. New York. The Pentagon. A field outside Shanksville.

No pitch today. Just remembering.

💰 **BAH is not a blank check for housing.**

A lot of service members know their BAH rate, but not everyone thinks about what happens when the local rental market moves faster than that allowance.

Your **BAH is based on pay grade, dependency status, and duty-station location**. If your housing costs less than your BAH, you may keep the difference. If it costs more, that difference comes out of pocket.

That matters during a PCS, TDY, training assignment, or temporary transition when you may only need housing for a shorter period.
