Before it was the Riverbank Motel… it was Bowl-Away Alleys!

This undated photograph from the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society’s "Early Lincoln Photos" collection captures a slice of local recreation history—a six-lane bowling alley once located in the Riverbank Motel area, near Clark's Trading Post.

On December 29, 1970, Deanna Huot and her husband, Ray Calistro, purchased 192 Connector Road—then a bowling amusement facility known as Bowl-Away Alleys. With plenty of elbow grease and entrepreneurial vision, the couple transformed six candlepin lanes into the eleven motel units that locals and visitors recognize today as the Riverbank Motel and Cabins.

What was once the sound of rolling balls and falling pins became a welcoming place for travelers to rest and make memories in the White Mountains.

The property has remained a family endeavor. Deanna passed the torch to her son, Tyson, and daughter-in-law, Hilary Calistro, who continued the tradition by purchasing the Motel, Pemi Cottage, and outdoor pool on September 1, 2017—ensuring that this local landmark remains family-owned and operated.

Lincoln’s history is full of wonderful reinvention stories like this one.
