The first commercial pretzel bakery in the Western Hemisphere was founded right here in Pennsylvania!

In 1861, Julius Sturgis opened the world’s first commercial pretzel bakery in Lititz, turning a traditional Pennsylvania German snack into a full-scale business. His bakery helped transform pretzels from a homemade staple into a widely loved American snack.

That original bakery still stands today as the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, where visitors can learn about pretzel history—and even try twisting one themselves. Proof that one of America’s favorite snacks has deep, doughy roots in the Keystone State. 🥨
