Did you know Littleton once had its own railroad station 🚂, and for a time, the tracks ended here?
When the railroad 🛤️ reached Littleton in 1853, trains couldn’t continue farther north for nearly two decades. That temporarily made 📍Littleton an important transportation hub for the surrounding region, bringing travelers, tourists, supplies, and goods directly into town.
The railroad helped fuel a period of rapid growth. Hotels and motels served arriving passengers 🧳, local businesses benefited from shipments 📦 coming into town, and goods ranging from building materials to dry goods and fresh oysters 🦪 passed through Littleton’s station before continuing throughout the North Country.
Here’s the part that makes the history especially fun today: The Little Grill 🍽️ now sits where Littleton’s old railroad station once stood (the one rebuilt after a fire in 1929). So, if you’ve ever eaten there, you’ve already spent time on a piece of Littleton’s transportation history!
So, the next time you’re walking through downtown Littleton, imagine arriving here not by car, but by train 🚂, and stepping off at the station with the White Mountains 🏔️ waiting just beyond town.
