Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric.

This 4th of July, I have 2 programs going on in the park to celebrate America 250!

From 10AM - 11AM, I will be leading a hike along the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trail to look for birds of prey. The meeting place will be the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trailhead. Mid-way through the hike, we will make it to an open area where we can look into the sky to try and find birds of prey soaring or perching along the edge of the forest. Throughout the duration of the hike, we will be talking about how influential birds of prey have been to the history of the United States and how the Bald Eagle became our national symbol. I will have 8 small binoculars and 4 small monoculars to lend out to guests for the duration of the hike, but I strongly suggest bringing your own if you have any. Restrooms will not be within walking distance of our starting point, so I'd suggest visiting a restroom before the hike starts! Make sure to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, close-toed shoes, and a positive attitude!

From 1PM - 2PM, Dr. Adrian Brettle from Sam Houston State University will be coming to give a talk about the Civil War and how it affected the United States! His talk will be held just outside of the Activity Center going towards the lake. He will also have some props that pertain to the Civil War with him to show to guests. Restrooms and water will be present nearby at the Activity Center, but I still suggest guests go to the restroom before the presentation starts and to bring their own water. Sunscreen and a hat are also highly recommended! I'm really excited to have Dr. Brettle as a guest, so I'd highly recommend y'all don't miss his presentation!

IMPORTANT:
We strongly suggest that if you want to attend any of these programs, or if you are visiting the park for the day regardless, that you reserve your day pass online before coming to the park! It's going to be a busy day, so it will make life a lot easier for everyone on staff, as well as the public, if you do so! The link to reserve a day pass is below.

DOG DAY OUT AT THE PARK RESCHEDULE IS HERE!

Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric.

I am collaborating with SPCA of Polk County on the 26th this month for a really cool program! SPCA will be bringing some of their dogs from the shelter out to the park for a walk along the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trail. The public is welcome to come and walk some of SPCA's dogs during the hike!

We will be meeting at the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trailhead and the hike will begin at 10AM and last around an hour!

Collars and leashes will be provided by them, so no need to bring your own!

I will be guiding the hike to teach visitors about the park and our resources along the way.

Dogs will be walked by visitors on a first come first serve basis, but if all dogs are being walked by visitors upon arrival, you are still more than welcome to hike with us!

It will be at the discretion of SPCA's staff to decide which dogs will be the best fit for each visitor to walk.

If you connect with any of the dogs and wish to adopt one, you can do so following the hike at SPCA of Polk County, which is only a 10 minute drive from the park!

Please note, it is NOT permitted for visitors to bring their own dogs on this hike!

Let us know in the comments if you are interested in coming and we hope to see y'all there!

Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric. I'm sure y'all have been noticing a lot of white flowering plants along roadways these past few months. That's because we are in the blooming season for Queen Anne's Lace (Wild Carrot)! In this video, we talk all about the plant, their highly toxic lookalike, Poison Hemlock, and more. I hope y'all enjoy!

SPCA DOG DAY OUT HIKE RESCHEDULED:

Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric.

The weather predictions for the park today have been fluctuating pretty dramatically for the past 24 hours and we are still unsure whether or not storms will be present for our hike today, so just to be safe, we will be rescheduling the SPCA Dog Day Out Hike for Friday June 26th, 2026.

The event will not be happening today.

All other indoor programs for the day are still on though!

We’re sorry if this disrupts anyone’s plans, but we will keep y’all posted with more details for the rescheduled hike as they come!

06/19/2026

Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric. Just incase anyone is wondering, the hike with SPCA of Polk County tomorrow at 10AM is currently still on. There is a chance it will get rescheduled due to potential inclement weather, but we will make the final call tomorrow no later than 9AM. It’s currently inconclusive whether or not storms will be present during the hike, so we are going to give it a little more time. Stay posted and we’ll let y’all know the final verdict tomorrow morning!

Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric. I just wanted to get on here and let everyone know that the lights at the fishing pier are going to be off tonight. If you still want to go fishing, feel free to, just be aware that the pier will not be lit as it usually is. Have a good one y'all!

Hey everyone! This is Ranger Eric. A very common sight this time of year is to see turtles making their nests in very, what most would consider, odd places. In this video, we learn why this happens and what to do if you see it happening. I hope y'all enjoy and learn from the video!
