"WHAT ABOUT ME? I'VE GOT POTENTIAL."

I was headed to our Airbnbs this morning when I spotted the elusive axis deer and stopped the Gator to take a few shots.

Apparently, this first-year fallow buck thought he deserved some attention, too. He wandered straight toward me—close enough for me to see those incredible eyelashes.

Almost immediately, my brain confiscated the song lyrics & I started humming, "He's got Bette Davis eyes.”

It will take him a few years to grow the impressive “paddle” antlers of a mature fallow buck. But he’s got potential.

Three of this year's fallow fawns, beginning to explore the ranch together.

This little trio also shows off some of the remarkable color variation in fallow deer. Both white and chocolate (melanistic) are recessive colors; the familiar tan-and-white spotted coat is dominant.

A surfeit of farm fresh eggs led to an afternoon of custards in the kitchen. I tried this Amish recipe for the first time and although an egg custard is about as straightforward as baking gets, it did turn out especially smooth. Tapioca pudding was up next, and in the wings--a cream pie with homemade chocolate pudding.
