National FFA Convention Day 4&5 Recap

The group loaded up and headed home Friday. Made it back in time for the choir concert Friday as well as the football & softball sectional game today and opening day of youth deer season.

Saturday morning, three LJ FFA members walked across the stage to receive the American FFA Degree - one of the highest honors you can earn in the organization. This represents years of hard work and dedication to both the leadership activity involvement as well as their individual SAE projects outside of class time.

Congratulations to Lane Breshears, Hunter Gohdes and Nate McLaughlin for earning your American FFA Degrees!!

National FFA Convention Trip Day 3 Recap

Started our day with a tour of the Fair Oaks Dairy Farm and swine experience. It was pretty neat to see in person the location of one of my favorite Dirty Jobs episodes! We learned about the entire operation from how they breed, feed, milk cows, market the milk and create fuel for the farm from the manure. We saw one of the 72 cow carousels and six of the robotic milkers in action. We walked through the crop experience building, calving barn, the apple orchard and pumpkin patch on our self guided tour.
We also saw the farrowing process in action as well as the swine growing barn and gestation barn.

Our next stop was at the Kankakee Sands Nature Conservancy. We learned about the process of rebuilding native prairies, restocking wildlife and also got to see the 100 head of native bison!

Third stop of the day was at RDM Aquaculture. These farmers traded raising pigs for shrimp and became the third company in the USA to raise shrimp indoors. We learned about their heterotrophic water production system and how it allows them to be successful.

From there we traveled to the student farm at Purdue University and toured the 3.5 acre farm that is run by students there. They have around 120 customers subscribe to their community supported agriculture (CSA) who receive biweekly boxes of dozens of different types of fresh produce produced on site.

What FFA trip would be complete without a wedding ceremony??

Headed home tomorrow!

National FFA Convention Day 2 recap

Today members had the opportunity to visit with over 400 exhibitors & colleges at the career expo in the Indianapolis Convention Center.
Later in the day we attended the opening session of the 99th FFA convention in Lucas Oil Stadium. Members joined the largest dance party in Indiana, heard from Indiana Governor Mike Braun, National FFA Advisor Travis Park and our keynote speaker Scott McKain.
Wrapped up the day at the hotel with some time at the swimming pool and around the fire pit!
Industry tours tomorrow!
