There’s no industry standard for what counts as a 3 ton, 5 ton, or 10 ton grip package. One rental house treats an item as standard, another treats it as an add-on. One truck carries a heavier rag package, another leans into rigging hardware. The number on the package is only a rough guide, so choose based on the actual work, not the shoot length.

-A 3-ton is built for interviews, shorts, indie features, and small stages. It’s not just a few stands and flags thrown together. It still covers the same basic categories as a bigger package, just with less depth and fewer duplicates.
-A 5-ton is the general-purpose workhorse for commercials, music videos, and medium-sized sets. For a lot of stage jobs, this is the one worth starting from.
-A 10-ton covers multiple sets, bigger crews, and heavier rigging. It’s not just a 5-ton doubled. It needs real depth across rags, rigging, ladders, and organization too.

Whichever size you start from, it’s still on the key grip, best boy, rigging crew, and rental house to tailor it to the job.

When you’re rigging a 20x20 overhead frame to a telehandler, weight and rigidity are everything. This rig used Division Rentals’ 20x20 telehandler overhead frame build, made from 6” and 9” Modulus-X truss.

The 9” truss acts as a laminated skeleton up against the telehandler carriage. The 6” truss builds the upright tower and the frame, keeping the whole rig rigid while staying lightweight.

We integrated lights onto the bottom of the 9” truss so the electricians had direct lights mounted right to the rig. We always add the swing carriage in case we want to pan the frame left or right.

Whole rig weighed under 3000 pounds and could go full stick on a JLG 1255.

Your stands are rusting right now if you’re not maintaining them.

Stands are the backbone of every rig on set. They hold your flags, nets, diffusion, reflectors, and lights exactly where you need them, and a rig is only as solid as the stands holding it up.

Most of those stands share one thing in common: nickel-plated chrome risers, posts, and legs. That plating wears down over time, and once moisture works its way in, rust follows.

Rain, ocean water, pool water, it doesn’t matter which. A stand left wet is a stand on its way to rusting. We’ve seen it happen in a matter of weeks when nobody wiped a set down.

Wax is the fix, and it’s a simple one.

We wax every stand twice a year on the calendar, no matter the season. But getting it right matters more than doing it. It has to be a real paste wax, never a spray or liquid polish, and WD-40 has no place here either. Lubricants strip the plating down instead of protecting it.

Work the wax into the chrome, let it haze over, then buff it off with a clean cloth. Switch cloths as you go so you’re not pushing grime back into the metal.

A can of wax, a couple of cloths, and some patience twice a year. That’s the difference between chrome that stays bright and chrome that chips and rusts.

When you’re rigging a camera to a motorcycle, center of gravity and counterbalance are everything.

We built this Rialto rig for a Dr. Groot spot with Bretman Rock. This rig placed the Rialto low on the bike and counterbalanced the camera with the Venice body on the opposite side. The core structure was M3FX truss hard mounted to the top of the rear seat with a cheeseplate and bolts. We added triangulation to another hard point under the seat using 3/8 bolts and metric to SAE adaptors.

The camera position was triangulated with speedrail and the camera dovetail was rigged right to the cheeseplate for maximum stability. Once we locked the angle, we didn’t need a dish leveling head or a mini ball head, which saved weight and eliminated any possibility of shifting.

We integrated additional points along the side of the bike for potential future mounts.
