Making a little more room around the property to start building campsites for you to enjoy! We’ve uncovered some neat spots we plan to glamp out including a small spring fed pond in the back forty.

While this may look like a lot of trees, our registered forestry guys actually helped the health of the forest by only removing invasive species. We still have plenty of beautiful evergreen, oak, maple, and walnut trees left and now a lot more room for activities! It was a big emotional decision to do this, and we are incredibly happy with the results.

Stay tuned, we will be having a MASSIVE bonfire soon and you’re all invited!!

Hey folks! I know it’s been awhile since we posted, it’s been a slow winter. The work we are able to do up north is limited in the cold and even more so until the invasive lumber is cleared, which can’t be done unless the ground it hard. So we’re in the planning stages right now for summer. And CHECK OUT THE COOLEST THING Courts dad and his wife had made for us! We can’t wait to hang this on the entrance way!

Putting the feelers out there… Is anyone brave enough to camp in the cold? We have talked about hosting AJ’s annual Stew Night at the Hollow this January.

Its a yearly tradition that started 7 years ago to embrace winter. We build a huge roaring fire and gather around it to watch a giant pot of stew cook while snow falls around us. We have hot cider and other warm beverages as well.

This would be a FREE camping event as a trial run before our grand opening in the spring. We plan to have not one, but TWO giant fires to keep everyone warm and toasty. Bring your pups, your ATV, and your best friends! Who’s interested?!?

Welp, we’ve got roof reinforcements, a loft with memory foam mattress, deck, and the beginnings of a railing. BONUS: .life found the lumber for the railings FOR FREE on marketplace and we got an entire trailer full for various projects around the property. It was a productive weekend at The Hollow!

We have landed on an official name for the lake side cabin. For AJ’s birthday, his good friend gifted him a really neat hatchet as we were on our way out to the property to break ground. This little tool was invaluable to us during the construction.

While we were digging trenching to lay the floor foundation it we used it to chop the tree roots we couldn’t dig up. Somehow it was overlooked and we built the whole floor foundation on top of it. Our handy little friend is now lost somewhere in the frameworks of our beloved tiny house. In honor of its service to us we have named the first cabin Fort Hatchet.

Here’s our progress on it this far. We have hopes to get a few other smaller bunk house style structures and a few yurts for you all to enjoy by our anticipated opening this spring.

Heyyyyo! We are still here! Our productivity took a bit of a hit because this little goober grew a growth on her leg that needed emergency surgery! 😖 😫😬

Biopsy results come in next week, so please send all your positive vibes to Miss Lottie! In the mean time, these two weeks are feeling like 6 months trying to keep a year old puppy immobile and comfortable, which means no camping for us. The worst part is we’ve had to keep her and her bestie apart this whole time because roughhousing is a big nono right now too.

So, unfortunately we’ve lost a couple productive weekends on the house and we need to get up there soon to reinforce the roof before the first snow fall, we’d also like to get up there before the harvest of the timber happens. Also, we get to install the CUTEST wood burning furnace .life found that we cannot wait for you to see!

Lots of things are still happening, just slowly but surly! Stay tuned!! 💕

McKenna Hollow is currently a forest. A forest so thick you can’t see more than a few feet in front of you. We’ve worked hard clearing spots to set up camp and get a glimpse of the lake that will someday be the main view.

In order to continue our vision, the land needs to be harvested. That’s 17 acres of THOUSANDS of trees, brush, bush - gone. This is terrifying. The industry tends to be scammy, it could destroy the terrain, and we could get ripped off. Not to mention, we still want woodsy vibes. We want our sites to be secluded, to feel whimsical- like you’ve just stumbled upon your own secret spot in the middle of an enchanted forest. If clearing the trees goes wrong, this vision won’t be realized for 20-30 years, if the trees grow back.

Needless to say, this decision has not been the greatest for my anxiety. 😰

Added to that, there were companies wanting to pay us tens of thousands of dollars for the maple, walnut and oak trees on the property. Think about it, as a start up company with a shoe string budget, a nice 20-25k check AND clearing the land was tempting. But something didn’t feel right.

I kept talking to different companies and I found someone who’s certified in forest health (that’s actually a thing). He patiently listened as we showed him maps of the property, and explained our goals. He went on site and told me that every. Single. Hardwood tree the other companies had marked, were trees he would keep. Those are the gorgeous, huge trees that span the canopy of the woods. Yes, they’re worth a ton of money, but he explained we want to keep them to keep their dna in the hollow. Instead he offered to take all the aspen and invasive species of trees. Leaving room for the majestic trees to grow and spread. We’re not getting paid nearly as much, but the idea is to keep the integrity of the forest.

This is happening soon and we’re a bit of a wreck. This is a good practice for me to remind myself change is good- and often necessary. That getting rid of something will make room for the growth of something better. To trust my gut, the vibes I get, and my intuition. But yikes. It’s harder than it seems.
*deep breaths* 😬🫣😮‍💨

“No, we don’t need more sleep. It’s our souls that are tired, not our bodies. We need nature. We need magic. We need adventure. We need freedom. We need truth. We need stillness. We don’t need more sleep. We need to wake up and live.”
