If you've been to my house for tea during the summer or fall (and I hope you have), you know that I have a small obsession with creating things from stone: walls, ledges, terraces and stairs. This summer, my project -- delayed by a month on crutches for a torn foot ligament -- was to finally finish the stairway on the far side of the upper garden (wait: in the spirit of my favorite British novels and shows, I'll make that "Upper Garden"), which falls on the west side of the hill behind us. I haven't done much gardening this year, but I've finally completed the stairs, to the ongoing fascination of the rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels and voles who dwell there and who have been watching me drag rocks around. I think they approve, but it's difficult to be sure. There's definitely been a lot of running up and down the steps; and I saw a squirrel fussing over the level I was using, left on the deck nearby. I feel there's a strong possibility he's planning to check my work for accuracy.

Let's have something lovely to think about today:

As a writer, I love it when people get creative with word combinations... but you can keep your Garage Coffee all to yourself: I'll have a pot of that Debonair Tea, please.

I had lots of fun guest posting on author George Cramer's blog today!

Debra Bokur is the author of the Hawai’i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series published by Kensington Books (The Fire Thief, The Bone Field, and The Lava Witch), often favorably compared by Publisher’s Weekly and other reviewers to Tony Hillerman’s Southwest-based mysteries. She’s served as ...

Working with author Jerry Jamison to narrate his book Dead Ringer was an absolute hoot, and one of my favorite projects to date. Among the host of fun characters, I got to play aging movie star Lana LeFleur from cinema's Golden Age. Jamison is a skilled storyteller, and this novella is a thoroughly entertaining murder caper. If you don't know his work, he's written more than 30 novels to date. Dead Ringer is part of his Tales of Suspense series. Total fun!

It's been a while since we've posted, I know. My book tours and a few other things have interfered with getting work on the inn completed, but we're back at it. Painting the kitchen ceiling and playing around with cabinet placement right now. Feels pretty wonderful.

How James removes wallpaper. He calls it his "nuclear option," and is impressively effective. That's the Someday Kitchen, by the way... a new, wider opening in a different spot will lead into the reconfigured space.

Found this lovely mint-condition teapot in a thrift store. It's destined for a guest room at the inn.

Broadway Inn Reno Project

The rich history of the Broadway Inn in Machias, Maine has been on hold for a decade. Abandoned, left to fall into ruins and missing the polish of its glory days, the inn was recently purchased by husband-and-wife renovators from Colorado. Act One of its refurbishment has begun — come along with us and enjoy the show!
