From tulips to lilacs! The 77th Annual Lilac Festival is underway, and like clockwork our lilac trees have started to bloom.🪻
Mackinac Island is renowned for its massive, century-old lilac trees—many over 150–200 years old—which have flourished since being brought by early European settlers. The island’s unique combination of high-pH, well-drained limestone soil, cold winters, and Lake Huron’s moderating climate makes it an ideal environment for lilacs to grow into “trees” rather than mere shrubs. Today, over 250 varieties of lilacs can be found blooming across the island.
Since 1949, Mackinac has celebrated these flowers with its Annual Lilac Festival—the first, largest, and most historic summer event on the island—which this year runs from June 5 to June 14. The 10 days of festivities include a Lilac Queen coronation, a 10K run/walk, a famous co****le tournament, a vintage bike rally, lilac planting seminars, lilac walking tours, a Grand Parade, live music, and more.
We hope everyone can experience it one day!
