The history of Manchester and Dorset is deeply connected to Vermont’s marble industry.

Beginning in the late 1700s, marble quarrying became one of the region’s defining industries, with millions of cubic feet of stone extracted from the mountains over the next century. By the 1880s, more than 400 workers were connected to the quarries and mills that shaped the local economy and community.

The historic Freedley Quarry on Mount Ae**us and the marble-lined features still visible throughout East Dorset today are lasting reminders of how deeply Vermont marble is woven into the landscape.
