🚢 25 Years Ago Today, Pennsylvania Lost One Of Its Most Iconic Roadside Landmarks 🛣️🇺🇸

The Lincoln Highway Was Once Lined With Motor Courts Like Ours and Unique Roadside Attractions That Made Traveling America’s First Coast-To-Coast Highway An Experience Unlike Any Other.

Sadly, So Many Of Those Places Have Disappeared, And Today, On The 25th Anniversary Of The Destruction Of The “Grand View Ship Hotel”, We’re Reminded Of Just How Quickly An Irreplaceable Piece Of History Can Be Lost.

Built Only A Few Years Before Our Motor Court In 1932, The Grand View Ship Hotel Was Perched High Atop The Allegheny Mountains Along The Lincoln Highway, Just 13 Minutes From Lincoln Motor Court.

This Incredible Ship-Shaped Hotel Was More Than Just A Place For Travelers To Stop. It Was A Destination In Itself, Offering Breathtaking Views Of Three States And Seven Counties. For Nearly 70 Years, It Stood As One Of The Most Recognizable Landmarks Along America’s First Coast-To-Coast Highway, Until A Devastating Fire Destroyed It On October 26, 2001.

One Of The Ways We Do Our Best To Keep The History Of The Lincoln Highway Alive Is By Incorporating Pieces Of Its Most Iconic Landmarks Into Our Own Motor Court.

Through Artwork Displayed In Our Cabins, Historic Memorabilia, And Generous Contributions From Friends Like Alan Morgan, Who Share Our Passion For Preservation, We Hope To Give Our Guests More Than Just A Place To Stay.
We Want Them To Experience A Small Piece Of The History That Made This Highway So Special.

We May Never Be Able To Bring Back The Grand View Ship Hotel, But We Can Continue Sharing Its Story, Showcasing Pieces Of Its Past, And Making Sure Its Place In Lincoln Highway History Is Never Forgotten. ❤️

We’ve Poured 100% Of Our Hearts, Time, And Energy Into The Motor Court Since We Became The New Owners In March Of This Year.
Every Little Improvement, Every Story We Hear, Every Guest We Meet, And Every Memory Made Reminds Us Of Why We Fell In Love With This Special Place In Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Some Days Are A Lot Of Work, But We Wouldn’t Trade This Adventure For Anything.

We’re Just As Excited About Lincoln Motor Court Today As We Were The Day We Started — Maybe Even More! ❤️

Seeing Vintage Vehicles At Lincoln Motor Court Is Like Stepping Back In Time To The Heyday Of The Great American Road Trip.

The Lincoln Highway Was Filled With Travelers Exploring Our Country’s First Transcontinental Route And Motor Courts Like Ours Were Welcoming Them Along The Way 🛣️🇺🇸

We Had The Pleasure Of Hosting Some Beautiful Pieces Of Automotive History This Weekend And Even Had The Opportunity To Join In On The Annual “Borek Haunted Reliability Run,” Exploring Local Bedford County Haunts and Beyond, Discovering Some Fascinating History, And Sharing The Experience With A Wonderful Group Of Guests!

We Fell In Love Bedford County, Pennsylvania ❤️🌳🌄

Before Moving Into The Caretaker’s Home At Lincoln Motor Court To Begin Our Restoration Efforts In March Of This Year, Avery Would Always Mention Just How Beautiful This Area Was.

The Rolling Hills, Endless Farmland and Orchards, Winding Country Roads, And Some Of The Most Incredible Sunsets Here At The Motor Court Have Completely Captured My Heart 🌅
The Landscape Is Reminiscent Of The Italian Countryside I Fell In Love With Back In 2019- It’s A Kind Of Beauty That’s Difficult To Put Into Words Unless You’ve Experienced It For Yourself.

Somehow, Even After Seven Months Of Living Here, We Still Find Ourselves Stopping To Take It All In.

We Came To Bedford County With The Goal Of Preserving And Restoring A Little Piece Of American Roadside History.
What We Didn’t Expect Was To Fall Just As Much In Love With The Place Surrounding It.

Lincoln Motor Court May Have Been What Brought Us Here, But Bedford County Has Given Us So Much More Than We Ever Imagined..And We’ll Never Stop Rooting for Everyone To Experience It As Well ❤️

🇺🇸🛣️ A Piece Of Lincoln Highway History Has Found A New Home! ❤️

In 1928, The Boy Scouts Of America (Scouting America) Undertook An Incredible Project — Installing Thousands Of Concrete Directional Markers Along 3,389 Miles Of The Lincoln Highway, America’s First Coast-To-Coast Road That Still Spans From Times Square To San Francisco 🌆🌉

Nearly 100 Years Later, These Historic Markers Have Become A Rare, Treasured Reminder Of An Era When Automobile Travel Was Still An Adventure And The Lincoln Highway Helped To Connect A Nation.

Now, One Of These Original 1928 Markers Has Found A New Home At Lincoln Motor Court! 🇺🇸

After Receiving Permission From The Lincoln Highway Association And PennDOT, We Relocated A “Hidden” Directional Marker In Bedford County To Lincoln Motor Court Where It Can Be Showcased and Appreciated By Travelers For Years To Come 🥹

For Avery and I, This Project Was Much More Than Just About Relocating The Marker.
The Lincoln Motor Court Has Welcomed Travelers Along The Lincoln Highway For More Than Eight Decades.
As The Last Remaining Motor Court Still Operating Along The Lincoln Highway, We Felt A Sense Of Responsibility To Help Preserve Not Only The History Here At The Motor Court, But Expand Knowledge On The History Of Lincoln Highway Itself.

We’re Incredibly Grateful To The Lincoln Highway Association For Allowing Us To Help Preserve This Piece Of Americana, Our Family For Helping Us With The Relocation, and Flagger Force For Preventing Our Death Along A Dangerous Stretch Of Highway 🤣

We Hope This Marker Will Continue To Educate Travelers, Spark Conversations, And Remind Future Generations Of The Road That Helped Change America.

Crisp Mountain Air, Colorful Trees and Peaceful Sunsets At The Motor Court 🍃🍂

Now, As The Leaves Begin To Change And The Beautiful Fall Colors Take Over The Mountains Of Bedford County, We’re Getting To Experience Our Very First Autumn Here 🍁

Lincoln Motor Court Is Decorated For The Season 🎃

🏡 The Cabin That Started It All 🇺🇸🛣️

When We Became The New Stewards Of Lincoln Motor Court In March, Cabin 4 Was The First One We Really Dug Into — And It Quickly Gave Us A Taste Of What Restoring An 80+ Year-Old Motor Court Was Going To Be Like 😂

The Wall-To-Wall Carpeting Was Torn And Needed To Go, But Underneath It We Discovered Something We Desperately Wanted To Save: The Original 1940s Linoleum!

Being That It Was One Of The Only Cabins That Still Had Its Original Flooring, We Spent A LOT Of Time Trying To Bring It Back To Life, Hoping It Could Remain Part Of The Cabin For Another Generation.
Unfortunately, After Decades Beneath The Carpeting, It Simply Wasn’t In A Condition That Could Be Successfully Restored 😭

So, Rather Than Covering Everything Back Up With More Carpet, We Chose Vinyl Composition Tile — A Durable Flooring That Gives Cabin 4 A Look Much More In Keeping With Its Roots.

And We Didn’t Stop With The Floors!
The Old Ceiling Was Removed And Completely Replaced With A Brand-New Ceiling, Giving The Cabin A Much-Needed Refresh From Top To Bottom.

But One Of Our Favorite Parts Of Cabin 4’s Transformation Actually Came From Another Family’s History ❤️

We Were Contacted By A Family Who Had A Beautiful Antique Bedroom Set Originally Purchased From Frank & Seder Department Store In Pittsburgh In The Late 1920s.
The Furniture Had Been Passed Down Through Their Family For Nearly A Century — And They Wanted It To Have A New Home Here At Lincoln Motor Court!

Now, Almost 100 Years After It Was Purchased, That Furniture Has Become A Part Of Cabin 4’s Story 🫶

Cabin 4 Was An Experiment, A History Lesson, And A Learning Experience All Rolled Into One.
It Was Truly The Cabin That Started It All, And Many Of The Things We Learned Here Have Helped Guide The Renovations We’ve Tackled Throughout The Rest Of Lincoln Motor Court.

One Cabin At A Time. One Piece Of History At A Time. 🇺🇸❤️
