🌴🦅 King of the Florida Keys Sky
Perched high above the water…
this incredible Osprey is one of the true rulers of the Florida Keys.
Known as the “Fish Hawk,” ospreys are one of the only birds of prey in the world that feed almost entirely on fish. In fact, about 99% of their diet is fish that they catch by diving feet-first into the ocean.
Right here in the Florida Keys, they thrive thanks to our crystal-clear waters and healthy marine life. These incredible birds can:
• Spot fish from over 100 feet in the air
• Dive at speeds up to 50 mph
• Rotate their outer toe to grip slippery fish with two talons in front and two behind
• Carry fish that weigh nearly their own body weight
Their nests can grow 6 feet wide and weigh hundreds of pounds, often built high on channel markers, mangroves, or dock posts — exactly like this one.
Moments like this are part of everyday life here in Marathon in the Florida Keys. When you slow down long enough to look up, nature always puts on a show.
