1. Cow Creek Road (County Road 328)
Links the two main trail areas of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge itself calls it a lovely 20-minute drive. There’s no refuge entrance along the road, so enjoy it from the car.
2. FM 1431 east of Marble Falls
A winding road that climbs and dips through the hills toward Lago Vista. Stop at Warbler Vista on the way for views over Lake Travis.
3. Park Road 4
Parts of this road were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. It winds past two state parks between US 281 and TX 29.
4. RM 2341 along Lake Buchanan
A curvy two-lane road heading north from TX 29 past Spider Mountain, with views across Lake Buchanan and open ranch land.
5. US 281 into Marble Falls from the south
Crest the last hill and the town comes into view, with Lake Marble Falls below. Then cross the bridge into downtown.
Fall color here is subtle, so come for the views and the soft evening light. Pull over only where it’s safe, watch for deer around dusk, and never drive through a flooded crossing.
Save this for planning your perfect Texas Hill Country road trip!
