316 East Market Street – Dr. G. L. Cassel Residence
Sheila & Michael Stotler
Between 1841 and 1873, the southwest corner of this property was the site of one of three original fire engine houses in the borough. In the 1880s, the lots were acquired by Abraham N. Cassel, a prominent Marietta lumber baron. In 1885, Cassel built this stately residence for his son, George Lincoln Cassel, M.D. Over the years, the home passed through several owners and uses. From 1949 to 1957, it was owned by the Zink-Penwell Post VFW. The original concrete pier supporting the front flagpole remains from this chapter of the home's history. Thomas and Claire Lavin purchased the property in 1974 and remained its owners until 2019, when the Stotlers purchased it. Since then, the Stotlers have thoughtfully renovated the grounds and interior room by room, preserving architectural details including original trim work, pocket doors, and wooden floors, with a different wood pattern featured in each room. In December 2020, a portion of the home became the Cassel House Airbnb, where a historic photograph passed from owner to owner remains on display. At the rear of the property stands the 1890 Carriage House which the Stotlers also refurbished. Restoration continues today, balancing modern-day living with respect for the home's historic character, an appreciation especially evident at Christmas.
For the Stotlers, Christmas at the Cassel House brings together the history of an 1885 home, generations of family traditions, and new memories being made today. More than 140 years later, its story continues, celebrated and shared with another generation.
