Did you know Marion, Virginia was home to an influential national leader?

Eleanor Gladys Copenhaver Anderson (1896–1985) was a trailblazing social worker and activist who dedicated more than 40 years to the YWCA, championing programs for working women, families, and industrial communities across the country.

Born and raised right here in Marion, Eleanor went on to lead the YWCA’s Industrial Division during a pivotal time in American history, including the years surrounding World War II. She later became the literary executor of her husband, acclaimed author Sherwood Anderson, preserving his legacy for future generations.

From small-town roots to national impact, Eleanor’s story is a powerful reminder of the remarkable people who have shaped our community. 💙
