We are hosting a meet and greet for our dear friend Jamie Ager for Congress this coming Monday, October 5th, from 5:30-7:30pm at Zadie’s in the Old Marshall Jail Hotel
This will be our 3rd event for Jamie and we are planning to build on the momentum and enthusiasm we’ve already created. Spread the word, tell your friends, show up and most importantly turn out to vote!!
People ask me why I support Jamie Ager and it’s because we’ve been friends for 28 years. I’ve watched him show up for his community and his family, and build Hickory Nut Gap into a great Buisness focused on regenerative agriculture with his wonderful wife Amy Frey Ager.
Jamie cares. He understands. He’s our people. He’s a strong mountain Democrat. I trust him 100% and will vouch for his character all day long.
Personally, I’ve never been more excited to vote for someone in my whole life and I’m just trying to do my part to get us the representation I believe we deserve here in the mountains.
Come on out and listen to what Jamie has to say about the issues and see for yourself that he is the best option for us in November.
Thank you all for listening and showing up.

Another fine week of music Zadie’s incoming. Late summer is setting in. The goldenrod and ironweed are blooming and golden hour is hitting just right in downtown Marshall.

Casey Driessen's Wednesday Bazaar residency rolls on, for the second to last time this year. Casey is joining us on the first Wednesday of each month through October to bring his singular fiddle playing and a bevy of effects pedals to entertain us in Marshall on the banks of the French Broad. The Wednesday Bazaar is a musical residency where fiddle loops, wild grooves, sonic oddities, and vibrant rhythms mix together in a swirl of color and sound. He'll be taking us, musically, from Marshall to outer space and back, with plenty of detours along the way. No two nights are alike... Come ready to trade the ordinary for a carnival of the unexpected.

Thursday we are excited to welcome Amanda Neill and Amanda Neill back to the patio. We tried to land this one last month, but the most brutal surprise thunderstorm knocked us out of commission. We'll stick the landing this time. Amanda played here with her old band The Greybirds and we are stoked to reacquaint you with her incredible songwriting and powerful, emotional voice. She has been cooking up some incredible tunes with this new project alongside Christian Neill. And of course, we are always happy to have Marshall's own Zack Kardon join us. We would highly recommend that you don't miss this one!

We'll be back for more next week. Every Thursday (and sometimes more) with wonderful original live music, food, and drinks from 6-8pm, rain or shine. Never a cover, always a good time!

Today we mourn the passing of another one of our most favorite people and a true Madison County character like no other.
Geraldine Bradburn Brown passes away August 28th and was laid to rest today beside the love of her life, Lowery Worley, at Kirk Payne cemetery in the Little Pine area.
Geraldine worked as the dispatcher for Madison County Sheriffs Department for 26 years, including 22 years at the Old Marshall Jail, which is how we came to know her.
She started as a dispatcher in 1990 with Sheriff Dedrick Brown and would continue to work for John Ledford and Buddy Harwood during their tenures as Sheriff, until her retirement in 2016.
I can honestly say that Geraldine is my favorite person that we met through the Old Jail project.
She was such a character.
We were not particularly close and I didn’t know her first that long but she certainly made a big impact on me in a short period of time.
She was straight to the point and told it like she saw it.
One day she told me today she “knew those boys in jail and she knew their situations”
That hit me because I instantly got what she was saying.
Product of your raising is real. And if you know someone’s “situation” you inevitably treat them with more empathy and understanding…which this world needs more of so badly right now.
She told me “all she ever tried to do was help. If those boys were hungry, I’d just make them a sandwich!”
Maybe it’s just that simple.
Honestly, maybe you can make a difference with sandwiches.
That idea was one of my biggest inspirations for starting Zadies!!!
The idea that maybe it’s as simple as making people a sandwich and making a difference that way.
You can certainly make a difference by feeding the hungry and taking care of those less fortunate than you.
Geraldine did that. She made a difference in her own small way. She also made a huge impact on me.
She was one of my biggest inspirations even though she probably wouldn’t believe me if I told her that.
Sometimes I would just go up to the Burger Parlor just to see Geraldine. She was one of a kind.
I’m gonna miss Geraldine.
We are losing a lot of our old timers right now.
I’m just glad I got some time with them.

We love exploring the history of the old jail. It’s interesting, complicated, fascinating and real. We’ve built a living history museum in the old jail devoted to telling the stories of the building and the people who spent time here.
We recently uncovered a new piece of the history of the old jail and the town of Marshall.
Our friend and neighbor found this amazing inscription written on the old plaster in 10 South Main, which is perhaps the oldest building in town.
It reads,
“The first work on foundation of the Madison County jail July 31st 1905.
Completed the jail January 1st 1906.”

We always thought the old jail was completed in 1905, but according to this it was completed on New Years Day in 1906!!!

We will not be able to display this inscription at the jail because it’s a part of a wall in another building and too fragile to move, but it will be preserved in its current location.

Another incredible week of music at Zadie’s this week. Let's lay it out here...

Wednesdays gets it started with Johnny Delaware (Johnny Delaware), a last-minute but worthy addition to the schedule. He's got a head full of new songs from his new record "On God's Time", which you can hear exclusively by purchasing a physical copy at one of his shows, with a wider full release TBA! Come let Johnny's golden voice soothe what ails you.

Thursday we've got Jay Gonzalez (Jay Gonzalez) rolling through from Athens, GA. Jay's day job is slinging guitar and keys in Drive-By Truckers, and by night he slings sugar-sweet pop tunes, a master of tone, texture, and melody. If we're lucky, he might bring his "acoustic keytar" — and what's that, you ask? You'll just have to come find out. This one's for the pop-heads.

Friday, Pleasure Chest (Pleasure Chest) makes their triumphant return for the first of a few scheduled shows on Zadie's patio this year. You know them, you love them, Rolling Stone loves them... everybody loves Pleasure Chest. Come cut a rug!

Finally, on Saturday the Jazz Foundation Of America is throwing a party all across Marshall and we are happy to host some acts. See the second slide of this post for details of the lineup at Zadie's and across the rest of town.

We'll be back for more next week. Every Thursday (and sometimes more) with wonderful original live music, food, and drinks from 6-8pm, rain or shine. Never a cover, always a good time!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Doward and Toka Gentry. Doward and Toka were the jailers during Roy Roberts term as Sheriff of Madison County from 1966-1970 and they lived in the jail! They were aunt and uncle to our dear friend Rozella who would visit them and spend the night when she was a young girl. She never thought anything about it…that’s just where they lived!
We love this image of their Christmas card from that era. Standing in front of the old jail with the courthouse behind them.
We wish everyone all the best in the upcoming year. It’s been a tough year for Marshall and all of WNC but I believe our best days are ahead of us.
Much love to you all.
