“This mole problem is getting really ridiculous!” 😂 Turns out our biggest yard invader this week wasn’t a mole — it was us. We’re trenching water out to the new Cascara Spa area, and Lilly’s out here running the ditch digger like a pro. We also set the pole for the new electric service! Slow and steady, this spa is coming together right in front of you. 🛁🌿

What a beautiful way to spend a Sunday 🙏 Big thanks to our incredible yoga teacher Heidianna () for the idea that’s taking Community Yoga to the next level — at 2 pm on the last Sunday of each month, class is free with a suggested donation of non-perishable food items for the McCleary Food Bank instead of a class fee. Behind every quiet, comfortable stay is a lot of unglamorous work you never see. Today the crew from McCleary Power & Light was here connecting our new 400-amp service box — the last piece of the electrical upgrades we’ve been quietly working through at the hotel.
There’s something satisfying about watching people who really know what they’re doing do it. Bucket trucks, careful hands, decades of experience — all so everything behind the scenes just WORKS! Day in and day out.
Huge thanks to the McCleary Power & Light team for the great work and for humoring us filming the whole thing. 🎥⚡

If you’ve developed neck tension from sitting at your computer too long today, try this simple stretch… sit up straight in your chair and let your hands hang heavy down from your shoulders… place one hand under your seat and just gently lean in the opposite direction, adding space between your head and shoulder, stretch gently for a couple of deep breaths. When school is back in and the crowds clear out the south Olympic Peninsula shifts into something better: cooler air, quiet beaches and a second growing season that turns everything green again. Coming off a few days at Mount Rainier? Here’s your 4-night shoulder season loop…
Night 1: arrive and unwind… check into the McCleary Hotel… take the historic tour then walk to Bandanna Brewing Company for pizza (they have a great vegan option) and a bottle before they close at 9! Back at the hotel… settle in by the fire with your pup (either the fire pit or the fireside room) plus the South Fir Terrace, gardens and Library Landing are all pet friendly.
Night 2: Hood Canal day trip -Highway 101 toHoodsport about 40 minutes, stopping along the water for photos and a leg stretch… detour to Potlatch State Park for an easy dog friendly shoreline walk. Night 3: Ocean Beaches day trip… West to Ocean Shores about an hour for a wide dog, friendly beach with none of the summer crowds. Walk in to Damon Point and Birdwatch for shorebirds during fall migration. Extend down to Westport for the Mermaid Museum, the Maritime Museum and jetty.
Last night in McCleary: bring dinner, draw a bubblebath and enjoy the fire.
Night 4: Up the Peninsula! Head north on Highway 101 to Lake Quinault for the rainforest loop and lunch at Lake Quinault Lodge, then Ruby Beach or Kalaloch for sea stacks and driftwood… Dinner at Kalaloch Lodge. End in Forks, your base for the whole rainforest and the north side of the Peninsula. Cooler… Greener… Emptier… this is the peninsula at its best. Everyone visits in July. Here's why you shouldn't.

Once school's back in and the summer crowds clear out, the South Olympic Peninsula shifts into something better: cooler air, quiet beaches, and a second growing season that turns everything green again. Fewer people. More room to actually relax.

Coming off a few days at Mt Rainier? Here's your 4-night shoulder-season loop — pet-friendly base camp at the McCleary Hotel, with plenty of time for you and your dog, then up the west side to the coast.

Night 1 — Arrive & Unwind

Roll in early evening, no agenda required. Check in, then take the historic tour and hear the building's story right where it happened. Walk over to Bandana Brewing Company for pizza (they've got a great vegan option) and a bottle before they close at 9pm. Back at the hotel, settle in by the fire with your dog at your feet — South Lawn firepit if the weather's cooperating, the fireside room if it's not (pets welcome in both, plus the South Fir Terrace and gardens and the library landing) — with a book or a vintage board game.

Night 2 — Hood Canal Day Trip

Head out Hwy 101 to Hoodsport, about 40 minutes through Shelton. Stop along the water for photos and a leg-stretch — quiet pull-offs where you and the dog can wander the shoreline, no crowds this time of year. Detour to Potlatch State Park on the canal for an easy, dog-friendly shoreline walk, quiet and cool this time of year. Back to McCleary for the night.

Night 3 — Ocean Beaches Day Trip

West to Ocean Shores, about an hour, for a wide, dog-friendly beach with none of the summer crowds. Walk Damon Point and birdwatch for shorebirds — a known stop during fall migration. Extend the day with a side trip to Westport for the maritime museum, the jetty, and a rougher stretch of coast. Last night at McCleary: bring dinner in from town, draw a bubble bath, and enjoy the fire again if you want it.

Night 4 — Up the Peninsula

Check out and point north on Hwy 101. Stop at Lake Quinault for the rainforest loop drive and lunch at Lake Quinault Lodge, then Ruby Beach or Kalaloch for sea stacks and driftwood right off the highway — dinner at Kalaloch Lodge while you're there. End the day in Forks — your base for the night before exploring the Hoh Rainforest and the north side of the Peninsula.

Cooler. Greener. Emptier. This is the Peninsula at its best — and shoulder season is the only time you get it this way.
